Mid-Major Game of the Week

Week 3 Edition

The mid-majors are tired of being called mid-majors. And with some of the shakeups they've shown in Weeks 1 and 2, they're starting to demand a little respect. Aside from BigMike and Boise State trampling on every foe that steps in their path, other non-BCS teams made some noise in the opening weeks. BYU upended Michigan State 48-27, Syracuse stunned #12 Iowa 38-35 in OT , and Boise State took down Ohio State early in Week 3. Other mid-majors stood their ground and hung with some of the big boys. #5 Texas survived an upset bid from Northern Illinois and it took 3 fourth-quarter touchdowns for the Kansas Jayhawks to fend off Florida Atlantic. Week 3 is a little light on the potential BCS buster upsets, so we will again feature two mid-major teams in this week's Mid-Major Game of the Week:

[CANE 7] @ [Mtwasik]

There's not too much love to be lost between these two teams, mainly because they have only played each other a handful of times in history. The Owls have started off on an 0-2 skid, dropping games to #19 Pittsburgh and Minnesota. TCU has fared better in it's sole game this season, taking down cross-border foe Tulsa.

Coaching Profiles At-a-Glance:

[CANE 7]

NDL Seasons: 5

Overall Record: 38-35 (52%)

Bowl Record: 2-1

Conference Titles: 0

National Titles: 0

[Mtwasik]

NDL Seasons: 18

Overall Record: 124-125 (50%)

Bowl Record: 7-2

Conference Titles: 5

National Titles: 0

Mtwasik is one of the NDL's original members. In his 9th season with the Horned Frogs, Mtwasik has built one of the longest dynasties in NDL history. He has 4 conference titles to show for it and has amassed an impressive 68-28 record over those past 8 seasons. CANE 7 is only in his 6th season but has reached the postseason 3 times and has a respectable 52% winning percentage. Despite losing the first two games, CANE 7 has a force at running back. Bernard Pierce has already pounded out 180 yards on the ground and tacked on 2 TDs for the Owls. Pierce pulls double duty, returning punts and kicks for the Owls as well. TCU is led by senior QB Andy Dalton, whose 4-year presence has given him an experience advantage over his competitors. He's an accurate thrower and isn't afraid to thread the needle. The Temple defensive backs will need to be quick to keep up with Dalton's targets.

THE Untouchable Prediction:

The Owls put their one their highest-rated players on the roster (and most important Impact Player), Pierce, at risk by having him on special teams as well as taking the handoffs. Fatigue tends to set in after awhile and the head-on hits take its toll. Dalton has the experience and accuracy to pick apart the Temple defense. Not only will Dalton throw for over 300 yards in this one, but his completion percentage will be at least 75%. TCU will continue its quest for a BCS bowl bid this season, and Temple is just a small speedbump in the way. My prediction last week was way off the mark score-wise, but I'm taking this one to the bank.

TCU wins this one 31-7.
