New York City

Post by Cnasty »

I know we have our resident NDL New Yorkers.

I am headed to a wedding in Central Park at the end of August for like 5 days.

Only other time I've been to NY was when I was 12.

I want to do some of the touristy shit but also want to get the little known joints and must eats/sees/dos while in town.

Also the wedding party is staying in Times Square (The Sanctuary, Times Square area?) so we would like to stay somewhere near there if possible. That place is already booked so we cant stay there.

If I remember we had a long thread of Dave and Trendon's recos like that Chinese joint you guys are always raving about. I need that type of stuff as well as any tips and shit.

I am so overwhelmed with so many options its nuts.

Thanks fellas

I stayed at a Doubletree Club on Lexington Ave. It was real convenient and not an arm and a leg. The metro was one block away and it was close enough to the Waldorf that I went there for Happy Hour every night. The bar at the hotel was called the Bull and Bear.

Take plenty of cab money and dont drive. Not because of the driving but because youll spend more on parking than the hotel. Enjoy!

The best food suggestion I got from Dave was Joes Shanghai in China Town. Best food I have ever had.

I remember you did a real long list of stuff but not sure if that was the old boards.

I look a little more in depth later. Maybe it was when coug went.

The good news is our plane tickets are free so that's a plus.

I've been on a warpath with tapas/small plates.

La esquina
Beauty & Essex (your girl will love the free champagne fountain ... in the women's bathroom)
Per se (very, very fucking expensive, though)
Stanton Social

If you like crazy ethnic food, just travel up ninth avenue west of midtown.

What about places to stay?

I'd like to be in the middle of it all like times square or so or at least closest to a lot of the stuff.

Being that the plane tickets are free we can splurge a little more and make it a sweet trip with the hotel if we can find a nicer, not ridiculously expensive. Also taking into account I am sure everything is expensive as hell for spending money.

Obviously, I would not know. I've never stayed in a hotel downtown. And, have you ever been to Miami, Chicago, or LA? Same prices.

Yea I figure location is the key, the room is just to sleep really.

I want to be closest to the tourist shit we wanna do, the met, central park, world trade, top of the rock, shit like that.

I know they all aren't near each other but if we can knock out 4 of the 6 in one spot and can to the others that would be ideal.

Jimmy's Corner Bar - Right off of Time Square on West 44th. Cheapest drinks in NYC, by a long shot. It's run by a former boxing trainer and has all kind of boxing memorabilia hanging up.

Pastis - http://www.pastisny.com/ in the meat packing district on 9th Ave. Bomb ass breakfast, but expensive.

The Halal Guys - Street Vendors. Late night eats at the corner of 53rd and 6th Avenue. Look for the huge line of people.

I've only really stayed at hotels in the city when I work and we're generally at the Marriott Marquis (Times Square), the Millenium (Times Square) and the Hilton Avenue of the Americas. I'd recommend any of the 3 if you want to splurge on a hotel room. I've had some friends stay at the 3 West Club, it was nice and it was cheap but they got some kind of deal online.

Stay away from Times Square restaraunts, they're like a tourist trap. Find the smaller restaurants.

Had very good pizza at Don Giovanni Ristorante on 44th between 8th and 9th near Time Square.

You can also visit The Original Soup Man on West 55th near Central Park for a taste of the Lobster Bisque from Seinfeld fame.

Really enjoyed the fresh bagels and lox at Zuckers down in Tribeca on Chambers Street. Best smoked salmon I've ever had.

If you want to tour the Ground Zero Memorial while you're in NY, you need to go online and reserve a ticket now. I believe it is free, but they don't take walk-ups.

Finally, there is a pedestrian path on the Brooklyn Bridge that runs above the car lanes and provides some great views of the city. Always wanted to try it and never got around to it. I think it would be work checking out one of the oldest suspension bridges in the country.

As mentioned, avoid Times Square. It is my least favorite part of the city and is, in my opinion, complete shit now.

Laguardia to Manhattan:
http://www.panynj.gov/airports/lga-taxi ... rvice.html

JFK to Manhattan:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passen ... rate.shtml

Looks like Laguardia is the way to go. There are also Port Authority buses, but you might have too much stuff for 5 days and a wedding in NY to take the bus.

Can also use this site, though I can't vouch for how accurate it is:
