Influential Opponents

Post by Weasel »

So Dave mentioned something to me which got me thinking, which opponent have you played in the past who has influenced your current game/style now? Im always picking up things here and there from opponents, and a combination of it all has molded my game to what it is now.

For me, the obvious one is Johnny. Playing each other as long as we have, we're always picking things up from each other. While I bust his balls all the time about stealing my offense (which he's always done  ), he has usually been a step ahead of me with defensive schemes, and Id be lying if I said I havent adopted a few of his techniques

Carlwayne: Not necessarily anything he did in particular, but I played him a couple times and spoke afterwards, and the thing that impressed me was his discipline. Not making any big mistakes, settling for an 8 yd gain on 4th and 15 instead of throwing an INT, that sort of thing. Nole falls into this as well

Shel/BIGmike: Played them both a few years back while Shel was at Northwestern and Mike at Michigan, and they had the "I dont give a shit what youre doing, Im gonna throw it all over you and there isnt anything you can do about it" game. Being at a bottom feeder school in a BCS conference forced me to change my philosophy and I started down the way of slingin' rocks

Weasel.
Ripped me a new one in a PM. :( Weird thing was, I wasnt even playing him. I was playing his brother.

And Dave
Taught me to never take a knee at the end of the game when up big, just run FB dives up the middle for short gains.

And Peay
Taught me to always take a knee at the end of the game when up big.

Dave - Though we rarely play anymore, he pretty much introduced me to online gaming when he let me into his Madden league, the MDL. It was a freestyle league and because of that, there were a ton of great players. They were cheese but they were great. That taught me to adapt and get better, especially on the user side of things. My user in NCAA sucks but I'd put my user up against anyone in a game of Madden. So Dave has had the most influence on me both directly and indirectly.

Nole - Him and I have always matched up well. In the times I've played him we had very similar styles of moving the ball down the field in short, safe, high percentage ways. Nole is always a good game.

BigMike - A great suicidal influence. He's too good.

Did I really come off as an asshole? I was offering some constructive criticism to a new member, didnt mean to be a douche. My bad if it came off that way!

My favorite was beating you in the MAC championship game with Josh Cribbs. :D

There was a while there where you had my number in NCAA. You ran like the most boring offense known to man and it would drive me fucking nuts.

AJ- taught me that if I keep using big run, he will rip my head off

George- taught me that doing something different, is not bad

Corey- taught me to learn everyone's first names because calling people by their usernames over aim/headset is stupid.

That style of mine hasn't changed since my Sammy Keller/ASU days, I seriously haven't changed my offensive style one bit. I throw throw and throw some more and at the end of the year, not one of my WRs has over 40 catches, but 5 of em have 30. Never fails. And the really weird thing is that I would never have a good TD:INT ratio...until the Jordan Jefferson days.

The only real influence would be Corey. From very early in our NDL days, we realized tha running was boring and just slinging it around was fun and more important than winning lol. We would record our games, bring in a copy on DVD and watch our NDL games against other opponents at 4am on the night shift. Man, those were the good old days.

I've always enjoyed running the ball and back on the PS2 when I had Jerome Harrison, it was pretty much all I did. Boring but effective. I think Tattooboy would remember that scheme well

Weasel to my actual style of play. i used to only run the ball and play grind it out games. because of him i now have a much more mixed offense.

Noley in my game play calling. i think he's a great play caller and always has you thinking.

Corey cause he whipped my ass a lot.

Shel taught me a lot about defense.

6Ft.

His screen game is fierce.

Sammy.

Since he whoops my ass on a regular basis I'm actually forced to learn how to play defense.

John.

Only played him in the farm, but the man knows his option game and I respect that being an option guy myself

It would be hard to narrow down individuals because I learn something from everyone I play.
Doc and VT more then anyone. Doc and I work on everything but VT and I have been at it with the defensive side.
BigMike, Nole, Shel, Weasel, Sixft, dawgit, plasma, Outlaw, Ice, dealer, oldschoola, are just a few that I have played and have been a good influence on me. Always a great game with thoseguys as well.

Oh snap I forgot about Pimpin'.

I learned a lot of discipline from playing that guy. A lot. He's a real cool dude too. And we've never met but somehow he knows I'm a pimp 8-)

VT : played him many times, and it always a challenge that helps me sharpen my awareness as he makes you pay for mistakes.

Nole : only played him a couple times, but the balance and how no one part stood out seemed to be one of the toughest to stop I ever encountered.

LytezOut : Since I got my start back in his league many years ago he has always been big on attacking weaknesses in the opposition and this has helped me work on disguising my defensive and offensive calls.

BigMike : The nightmares of several games were I could have won, but a bit user pick or user strip by him turned a potential great win into years of flash backs, mostly his user stripping my CB with his QB right after I user picked him off and only would have had to take 3 knees to win.
