Gran Turismo 5
Gran Turismo 5
Now that the game is out, who's got it and what are the thoughts?
I've been enjoying it but finding that it suffers from the same issue with "level of challenge" that it did in the past. Beating the computer AI isn't hard when you can bring a car into a race that is so much more powerful than their cars. I've had to intentionally tune down to the level of competition to make the races more exciting. Perhaps this is just for the early races, though.
Found that the cart racing is a nice way to make some quick money once you've unlocked those races. No other obvious money makers yet in the first two rounds of events (Beginner and Amateur).
Would there be an interest in an NDL race night since we can do up to 16 people in head-to-head racing?

Re: Gran Turismo 5
Wouldn't even be fair when I bring out my Bugatti Veyron with over 1000hp.
Haha i'm not very good but id be down for a couple races. Also, you have the ability to borrow cars. So this would also be a good thread for that. I need a ferrari for the ferrari only race. Anybody?

Picked it up yesterday, loving it. I'm actually doing the Spec B races as well where you have drivers that race for you. Pretty interesting how the used cars pop up, I've been looking for a Mazda Axela (I have a Mazda 3 IRL).

I've just never really gotten this series for some reason. I think it may be because it's just too realistic if that make any sense. I need some arcadey silliness for driving games.

I feel the same way peay. I like realistic handling and all that jazz, but, like the past couple NASCAR games, I don't want to feel like I need a fucking mechanical engineering degree to set up my car. so how is that done in this game? I haven't play GT since #2 or #3.

Re: Gran Turismo 5
I haven't had to do major tuning. For some cars when you see that you're red-lining in 5th gear on some tracks and not reaching a true top speed you can adjust your gearing (if you have the fully adjustable transmission) but otherwise it is "add as much HP as possible through after-market" and you're good to go. Eventually you can add braking and suspension upgrades but that can come way later in the game.
Besides, I don't know you need much of a degree for most of the stuff. If your car takes too long to slow down, you increase the braking settings.
Now if you want to do adjustments to the slip differential, wing angle/downforce, or tuning wheel camber and suspension stiffness then you might have to read up a bit on what you should do.
It is a racing sim so it is good they have all the depth, but you can play it arcade style if you want to (with limited loss of playability at the highest game levels).

That is the shit that pissed me off about the NASCAR games as of late. way too much detail and if you didn't understand all that shit, you suffered greatly. good to know.dakshdar wrote:

Re: Gran Turismo 5
I bought this yesterday, and like it so far.
Bought the cheapest car on the page, started the first license, and by the time i finished the first one I had leveled up enough to cart race. Special Events are definitely the way to go to get quick cash and level up. I was able to take the money I had and tune up a Nissan Skyline, and have been able to hang with some of the supercars. Only one I have not been able to be competitive on yet is the shorter Nurberring course, not the 7 minute one, and thats going up through the professional? (3rd tier) of races

Re: Gran Turismo 5
I was using the racing transmission and the quick ratios were causing me to jump out to a quick lead, but max out around 180 while the others were hitting closer to 200 on max speed. I just need to probably spend the money for the custom transmission and tune it to combine acceleration and top speed
Re: Gran Turismo 5
so can someone explain this game? Is it like races on tracks? or can u drive around the city and do races. I dont know shit
Re: Gran Turismo 5
It is all track racing with some of the tracks being real life race tracks (Mazda Laguna Seca in CA being one), some being made up tracks, and some being tracks in famous cities (Rome, Tokyo). There is no "traffic" on roads or anything like that.
It is a sim racer. If you've ever watched SCCA racing or Euro GT racing on Speed it is like that (though you can drive normal, every day cars in races as well, tuned up or stock).
The courses are similar to F1 courses (I guess) rather than NASCAR (though there is NASCAR and also WRC rally racing).
It is also not about just tearing around on the track. It is about taking proper racing lines and cornering at the right speeds in order to maximize efficiency and speed. I think it is awesome but it definitely isn't for everyone.
Just watch the trailer if you're curious:

Re: Gran Turismo 5
Love the series. I have a GT force feedback steering wheel that i break out from time to time. Its fun but less sim than using the regular controller. Wish there was a better wheel around that made it feel more like a real driving experience.
Ill prolly get his after this coming NDL season as well.

Re: Gran Turismo 5
The problem I had with previous Gran Turismo games is that I become unbeatable when playing the CPU. Is that still an issue?
Re: Gran Turismo 5
I like to use cars that are within the range of horse power and weight. If I've added clutch and flywheel and done things like that I'll run with a lesser hp. I've had some good races forcing me to use drafting to pass on straight-aways instead of just relying on the cars dominance.trendon wrote:The problem I had with previous Gran Turismo games is that I become unbeatable when playing the CPU. Also I like to the B Spec races, it throws a different aspect of racing into the game where you control drivers on a team and direct them throughout the race.
Re: Gran Turismo 5
I plan to ge this, but was wondering a few things. I did not play 4 but I Played 3 a ton. In 3 i remember it not being easy to beat the cpu cuz in many races you could not enter unless your car was within the qualifications of the race. Is this still true? I ask because of trendons comment about dominating the cpu. I always went through all the circuits and there were many that I did not get gold on the 1st try. When I started i think i got a mazda miata or some shit like that, had to get money from racing with that POS and then win cars or buy them as I won the certain class races. Is the game still set up like this? I always played it sim and not arcade so maybe thats why it seemed to be much harder.

Re: Gran Turismo 5
ok, so I've got the '62 buick special, that is my favorite car I've got so far. Raced it at Daytona, hit the wall, now it has $360k+ worth of damage to repair. 1. How is that even possible? 2. is there a point where damage actually affects the car or makes it undriveable? It still seems to drive fine.
