I was actually going to do the same Winter Meeting topic. Obviously we can't start it for the next draft

Re: Draft Lottery Open to all non playoff teams
We have less teams that make the playoffs though how would that be affected?
Also it depends on the odds- I dont think you should have a chance at a top 3 pick if you finished 14th

I was looking at the MLB model. Last teams out were like 0.67% something that little to no shot but I love it battle's tanking even more.

Re: Draft Lottery Open to all non playoff teams
Speaking of, Ryan can you confirm exactly how the lottery works?
Is it like the NBA in that we do the top 4 only then everyone slots in after? So basically, you have the ping pong balls, and the first team you select should win pick #1, then 2/3/4. That's it for the lottery, and everyone else slots in based on record.
Re: Draft Lottery Open to all non playoff teams
I voted, and then relized I would like more info on how this would work exacly. So I may change my vote based on how it would work.

That's the draft lottery sheet. Top 3 teams get equal chance and then it tapers off. Billy set it up so I'd need to talk to him but I would think we stay the same and just keep tapering off the %s. I will look into it.
Re: Draft Lottery Open to all non playoff teams
So it looks like the MLB does exactly what we are suggesting here. Here are the odds they use
1 16.50%
2 16.50%
3 16.50%
4 13.25%
5 10.00%
6 7.50%
7 5.50%
8 3.90%
9 2.70%
10 1.80%
11 1.40%
12 1.10%
13 0.90%
14 0.76%
15 0.62%
16 0.48%
17 0.36%
18 0.23%
They don't have a rule in place like the NHL where you can only jump 10 spots so technically 18 would have a super small chance to jump to 1. Also that restriction is almost impossible to simulate from all the sites I searched so just copying what the MLB does seems like right play. An eyeball test seems like the %s are pretty good to me.

Re: Draft Lottery Open to all non playoff teams
I get the odds and such but do you pick the "ping pong balls" 10 times are just 3 or 4?
And conversely, the 1st team chosen should be the #1 pick, then the next #2, and so on, correct?

We use a website and I honestly have no idea how it works in the background tbh. It just runs off pure %s I assume.

Re: Draft Lottery Open to all non playoff teams
Just looked at that Google Doc, I think we need some major overhauls to the lottery.
Looking at 2085, SF had the #1 lottery odds but finished with the #9 pick. Maybe that's what guys want, but I'm not a fan of that all. I'd think the lottery and "ping pong balls" should only pick 3 or 4 teams. And the rest are slotted in by record.

Then you are voting no on this proposal sir lol. It's been this way since 2085.shel311 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 04, 2022 12:08 pm Just looked at that Google Doc, I think we need some major overhauls to the lottery.

This poll definitely makes the above worse.

Re: Draft Lottery Open to all non playoff teams
Right now it selects all 10 spots mainly because the only site I found that is free and allowed me to reveal one at a time from 10 to 1 did not give the option to only do a certain amount. I am sure a more tech savvy person can find something that works.
For the record I like it better like this.

This has failed 9-13.
