Congrats to all the Browns fans I’ve harassed over the years, I’m sure last night was extra sweet
Decades of futility... to do it under those circumstances, in Pittsburgh, like that... unbelievable.
More importantly, I don't think this is a just a 1yr run. Schedule will be tougher next year and we'll still be fighting just to get in, but what Berry/Stefanski are doing here is different. I see a lot of parallels between what's going on here and what happened in the early 90s with Green Bay (Holmgren/Favre breaking GBs terrible run)
I am happy we seem to have a front office/coaching combo that the players want to play for. Been a long time since we have had that.
They seem to really respect Stefanski and he seems to know what he is doing.
For the first time in a very long time, the future looks bright in Cleveland.
Now, I hope they can keep the team together, the staff together and continue to build off of it and give us a product to be even more proud of.
I see Berry (front office) and Stefanski here for the long haul. I don't see anyone coming after Joe Woods (DC) any time soon. While he's had steaming piles of dog shit to work with this season, he hasn't really done anything special. After last night, I'm Alex Van Pelt got a lot of spotlight. He's a 1st year OC, but does have a decent track record having previously worked with Rodgers. There's a lot of HC openings this year, but I'm hoping that the 1st year OC thing keeps teams away. If he did move on, I wouldn't be panicking, because Stefanski isn't running a complicated scheme here. He's about process and precision, not so much creativity and complexity. Any core WCO/Zone run guy can come in and work within that. Now... the 1 guy that needs to remain hidden and that I'm most concerned with losing, is Bill Callahan. He's bounced back and forth as OL, OC, and HC over the years and I'm REALLY hoping that he sees how awesome our OL group could be for a few years and he's content to stay here in that role. He's really not meant to be an OC/HC, but he is one helluva OL coach.
My other low key concern, long-term... what happens when we start spending money? We know they want to be cost efficient and blend in the analytics (everyone does obviously), but I don't know that we have a clear indication on what they value in terms of spending right now, because we haven't had to come to the table under this regime. To me, to succeed in the AFC North, it's OL, DL, DB and taking care of Chubb/Hunt. But RB isn't something that teams typically throw money at. You obviously don't want to overpay a ton, but with the ridiculous weather in Cleveland and the way the wind swirls and is enhance coming off of the lake, I don't think all of the normal rules apply.
I'm not eager to go out and spend a ton. We're young. If this roster showed up next season, here are some immediate benefits:
- Beckham returns (lets avoid the #s argument before/after injury for now, we all know what it says)
- 2nd year for J. Wills
- M. Wilson will turn 23, J. Phillips 22... both were young for their draft classes.
- G. Williams has been out all season, he should be back to start opposite Ward. Greedy just turned 23, he was also young.
- D. Ward missed 4.5-5 games this season, plus last night's game.
- R. Harrison will turn 24 this spring, he missed a ton of time. Played more than 50% of the team's snaps just 5x.
- G. Delpit didn't play a snap this year. Well before last year's draft I said that the 3 biggest defensive playmakers were going to be Chase Young, Isaiah Simmons and Grant Delpit. So obviously I was thrilled with his pick and I'm still super-high on his potential.
Those are some really big steps forward for this team. Realistically, I could see them moving on from Beckham, which I'm indifferent on. I know what his image is, but I also see the stuff that doesn't get spammed all over media. He's fully supportive of the team and he busts his ass. Really similar to how Chad Johnson had a very bad rap in Cincy. On the other side, for all of the amazing catches/runs he makes, he misses so many basic things. A lot of poorly run routes and trying to run before catching the ball, resulting in unnecessary drops/tipped ball INTs.
Either way... we're going into Wk.2 of the post-season and I'm not looking at mock drafts!
