I get what he was trying to do (if you believe him at his word on the tape). I think he was wrong in doing so. But I also believe if he said it was as bad as he thought it was at that time the Dems would have said it wasn't, "come to china town!"

I also question Woodwards journalistic integrity. If he thought it was that bad, why not release the tapes then. I can answer that for you, it's all about money. He wants to sell books and knew his book would come out right before the election.

Woodward didn't have to say anything. Trump downplayed it for so long that everyone knew he was full of it and just couldn't believe he was still going on with his "It'll just disappear one day" crap. By then, the story wasn't that Trump was downplaying it, so there was no point.

If we're talking all the way back at the "beginning" then who really knows. But, if you're dealing with a potential crisis (i.e. not knowing that it will be bad but knowing that it may be bad) the play would be to express calm and show you are prepared to handle it in public but scramble like crazy behind the scenes to prevent the worst from happening. Downplaying it doesn't inspire calm when everyone calls your BS.

WHO was publishing their reports January 5th (initial reports). It wasn't a news story here for another month? You have to guess Trump administration knew in 2019. It's not as much of a "downplay" as a "didn't react" (just my opinion). But remember, it's not his fault, Obama didn't leave him with a vaccine for a disease that wouldn't be around until 3 years later...
