I so wish we would get rid of this 2 party bullshit and have a voting system where people would actually vote for who they feel is the best candidate instead of voting Republican or Democrat because.
I hear you about how it would take votes away from so and so, but I am not talking about just voting independent, we need to get rid of the 2 party system.
A few years ago, you had basically every Republican politician hating Donald Trump, until he became the main guy, then, all of a sudden, let's back him because.
I hate it. I can't stand our voting system.
The way our voting works today, I hate that it comes down to voting for the lesser of two evils.
I should not have to vote that way, so in turn, I don't vote.
This is why, for many years, I never voted.

That's another thing, the cliche for as long as I can remember has always been if you don't vote you don't get to complain or whatever.

But it's bullshit. If all the candidates suck, in my opinion I'm doing more for my country by not voting for any of the shitty candidates than the next guy who goes out and votes for a guy he admits is a shitty candidate, but just less shitty than the other guy.

I'm just gonna toss in a write-in vote for Mark Cuban from now on.

Yep, I started to type that in my last response.
I was told that before, so many times. I was like, ok, whatever. Just because both candidates suck and I don't want to give either my vote, doesn't mean I don't pay taxes and I still don't have a voice.

Or someone that goes out and votes Republican because our country has a shitty as system because of my stand on gun ownership and gun control I would be considered a Republican if I had to align with 1 of the parties, so I am supposed to vote Republican? BS!

I happen to like guns and feel we have a right, as Americans to own them, but then I may have another topic where I do not align with the Republican side, at all.

Hypothetical scenario and question...

Let's our 2 party system is magically wiped out today, RNC, DNC, whatever else, all disabled, effective immediately. We know have a 100% open election for 2020, not including Trump or Biden. 6-8 new parties are formed and we head into this Utopian 2020 election.

How many more election cycles will it take for us to be back to a 2 party dominated system?

I'll go with 2. While it sucks, at least from a moderate right/left standpoint, there are still core dividing factors. Not really shades of gray. Mostly black and white. So this creates a clear left/right divide (we'll call it up/down in the future if it makes you feel better). So even if you start with 6-8 parties, they are going to be on 2 sides of an issue. In most cases, these dividing issues come down to the fundamental thought process of the individuals and if choose side A on 1 issue, you're highly likely to be on side A with the other major issues. Once these lines are drawn, then it's going to come down to identity politics and personal liberties.

1a, 2a, and 3a are on one side of the core issues 1b, 2b, and 3b are on the other, while 1c and 2c are split on core issues. 1c and 2c are dead in the water. Most people have a clear, 1-sided opinion on core issues.

Let's say 1a wins 2020. 1c and 2c flounder around like the green party and try to find a place, but their voter base diminishes as they see they are have no chance to win. 2a and 3a will be working hard to steal some of those votes using differences on non-core issues, while all of the Bs are attacking 1a. While the parties won't merge, B is highly likely to form a clear front runner as a counter to 1a. 2a and 2b are likely to have 1 stronger candidate come forward. By 2024, the race is already down to incumbent 1a, 1 of 2a/3a who is on the same side of the core issues, and the front runner of 1b, 2b and 3b. In 2024, the incumbent and same sided core issue candidate bump heads, split votes in the general and the front runner of the b side wins behind the power of those that are voting in a more uniform way against the incumbent's core issue stance.

2028 comes, side B's base is stronger because of the initial build up to take out 1a. There's not much competition to eat away at them. But now the base on side a of the core issues has rallied. Then there were 2.

A long, goofy answer, that doesn't go into the influence of identity politics, social media (societal influence) or media in general. In the end, it's not about this "horrible 2 party system." It's about a clear divide on core issues that is going to almost always exist. When the time comes to cast your vote, you are either voting in the best interest of yourself or the best interest of the everyone. Most people are going to put their vote behind the option that aligns with their most important issues first, then on secondary issues.

I honestly don’t know where to turn to anymore for my news.

Every station is so slanted, every publication has an agenda.

I understand there won’t be a perfect option but damn it’s pointless and frustrating when I just want some simple facts.

i stil dont get the team aspect of politics. Every situation should be independent.

Example:
Im indifferent to guns. I might own one soon if shit gets worse
I dont care about abortions
I dont care about gay people getting married

so im 2 left 1 right? but like.. im right on a big left issue? so is that 2 pts? so im 2-2?.. how about we let people do what they fucking want with their own lives and so long as its not like illegal or intruding on your own life, stay the fuck outta it..

welcome to the libertarian party. Trendon and i welcome you

(i don't identify as libertarian, this was just a joke. i would never identify as any party... its an absurdly naive way to live/think, imo)

Just curious on the 3 parties that received ~>20% vote. Was this a mid term election, an incumbant in the seat and running again or an election like we had in 2016/2008/2000 where both major parties didn't have a person in the White House?

I am like this with you in a sense. I know I lean right, so abortion should be a key factor in my voting. But it doesn't because, as I fundamentally think abortion is wrong, who am I to say what is right for "you" and your situation? I'm not overly religious either, but I believe there has to be more than this. So if you abort a baby I think whatever happens in the next life may determine how you live, whether it's heaven or hell or you are a roach or lion or whatever.
