I took my phone into Verizon for my 2 year upgrade, they told me the "condition" it was in and gave me actually a lot more money toward my old phone than I actually thought it was worth. They deduct the "turn in" amount from the upgrade price of the new phone plus tax on full price of new phone, then I pay monthly. As long as the screen powers on and works they take it back and there is no "buyback". You turn it in or you keep it. There is no value assessment.
