1 month old is usually safe.

Practice lines such as "man, my dad and mom have been clamoring for some Baby Weasel time!" or "Wouldnt it be nice to have your mom and dad in town for a while to really spend time with you and the baby?"

2016 Golf Trip Recap:
General Location: Lexington, KY
Courses: Old Silo (Mt. Sterling area), Big Blue, Wildcat (front 9), Cherry Blossom, Kearney Hill

Pre-trip:
For the last 2 years or so I've really tried to form my golf swing. I've spent a lot of time watching Hank Haney's instructional videos and I've made some monster strides in terms of distance and some good strides in scoring, shooting between 95 and 105 from the "blues." While not great, the frequency of the sub 100 rounds was definitely becoming greater than the 100-105s. The whole change was centered around a larger, faster swing, to get the most distance and making it easier to fix my own mistakes when I mishit a shot.

On Tuesday night, I messed up my back. I've had an issue pop up about 4-5 times over the last 10 years and when the disc slides over, it can lead to a crippling pain. I went to a chiropractor on Wednesday night and he told me that it was about halfway out. I asked if he could do enough to my back to get me through the weekend so he gave it a shot. Did the electro stuff, then popped it back in. I went back Thursday night, before I left town for 1 last treatment, but I was still in some major pain. I was probably crazy for even trying to play... but this is my favorite weekend of the year and I didn't want to miss out.

Day 1 - Old Silo
The course used to be rated as the best public course in Kentucky and one of the top 50 nationally... sadly, they are letting grass grow over all of the bunkers now and they are clearly struggling financially. With that said, it is still a remarkable layout with incredible views. It's more of a links style course with some Tennessee mountain golf mixed in, but without the major wind/water impact. Very good strategic use of the landscape. They seem to be doing they best the kind with the financial situation that they are in.

The round consisted of 1800mg of ibuprofen, 2 treatments of Biofreeze (love this stuff now), and 109 strokes. I realized on the range that this was going to be an adventure. I couldn't turn more than 50% of my normal backswing and I couldn't shift weight at all. So I had to choose between 80%-90% of the weight on my back foot or front foot. I pulled my first 3 drives dead left and into hazards. Around hole 8, I thought I was loosening up and decided to try to put a good swing on my tee shot... this was a poor decision. Dead left and more pain. I finished the front 9 with a 57 and a reality check about how much bending down and getting up you do in a round of golf. The back 9 improved, but my back didn't. I finally figured out that the front foot was the best option and that the constant bending was going to be the biggest problem of the weekend. The actual pressure of the shortened swing was that bad. 1 day down and night of ice and drinks (mind you, I don't really drink) followed.

Day 2 - Big Blue (18), Wildcat (9)
Big Blue was in perfect condition. I've played a few other college home courses and I have to say that Big Blue was near the top. It had some similarities to Old Silo, but the maintenance was great. The whole clubhouse and area felt like a well run facility. Wildcat on the other hand was a stark contrast. It was in rough shape, older and almost as if they just put all of their effort into Big Blue and said screw the other course. Very strange.

I went into the day hoping to improve on the 109 but had a feeling that the pain wasn't about to end and I should just hope to get through the round healthy at this point. I was really tight to start the day. For anyone that has had this kind of back/disc issue, when it slips, it's horrible. On the 3rd (maybe 4th) hole, I was getting up from marking my ball on the green and it pinched. I thought I was done for sure. It happened again on the next hole, this time stepping out of the cart on a slight side hill. Just the angle as I put both feet down was enough to start it. Somehow, I managed to shoot a 53 on the front. The interesting thing about knowing you can't hit it far is that to make the ball go anywhere, you have to have perfect contact and it was like my concentration level was at it's peak. My chipping and putting helped a ton. The back 9 was more tolerable in terms of pain, until the 17th, where I actually dropped to a squatting position on the ground when it caught me off guard. I had kind of taken it for granted that I loosened up and it reminded me that it was still there. We ended up with some rain from 13-16 that caused a few fat shots and some bad shots in general but I finished with a 49, 102 overall, which I'm happy with, considering everything else.

For the last 9 holes, we grouped up for a scramble. I opted out of about 50% of my shots and tried to avoid getting in/out of the cart as much as possible. The scramble ended up being one of the wildest ones we've played, even though it was only 9 holes. Our team had a 2 shot lead, until we ran into the 8th hole. It was a 203 par 3, with a 185 water carry. As we came up, we saw the group in front of us and their best player was hitting last... it was clear that he intentionally bombed one over the green to a hill, so we knew they were struggling. Of course we gave them shit the whole time they were on the green. Little did I know we were about to do something in a scramble that I've never seen before... triple bogey! We put 8 shots in the water! Sad, yet hilarious at the same time. At the end of the scramble everyone waits around on the last hole as a group to see who wins. One of the lasting memories we have happened at Tobacco Road, basically in the dark because it was so late... the last team needed to hole out a shot from 70ish yards to win it... and right after someone yelled out "No Pressure," the guy sunk it. So now that we had dropped out lead into the previous pond, the last team coming in had a chance to beat out the 2nd one. They had a chip about 20 feet off of the green to win and sure enough, someone jokingly yelled out "No Pressure" as a reference to our previous great moment. Boom... the guy drains it. Helluva shot and a lot of fun to witness.

Day 3 - Cherry Blossom 18 and back 9
Cherry Blossom seems like your typical upscale community built around a golf course. On a scale of 1-5, everything would be a 4 star. Really good, not great. I'd definitely recommend it if you're in the area though.

45 holes in the books, I'm half way there. At this point I've accepted that the back isn't getting better. So I just keep popping the pills, spraying the Biofreeze and being ever more cautious about everything I do. I've now figured out that anytime I get out of the cart, tee a ball, fix a divot/ball mark, or mark my ball, I have to pause, kneel properly and be extra careful. Everyone helped out a lot by fixing marks for me when they could getting my ball out of the cup... of course I got to hear numerous Broke Back Mountain references in exchange for the helping hand. Swell guys, I'll never quit them. Part of the reason for that was the morning round gambling game was a 2 man combined score setup, using a handicap based on the first 2 days. My partner was also having some minor back issues. We ended up with the last laugh however. By now I had the grandpa swing down. I was able to get just enough hip turn to get a 75% backswing and could still get full arm arc and wrist hinge. This setup will, giving me a low and consistent 240-250 yard drive. I was also adjusting to my distances with my irons. For anything from a 6 down, I needed about 1 more club or 15 more yards. The only real issues that I had were with my 4i, 5i and 3 hybrid... I couldn't get them up in the air very often. So in those cases, I'd just look to hit it around 200 and keep it low and fast, to setup for a wedge shot. I think all of this goes back to better concentration as well, because my short game and putting were on fire. I ended up going 48/47, for a 95. I would have been happy with that score on a normal day.

The 9 hole game in the afternoon was pink ball. The score is made up of the person that has the pink ball for the hole and the best of the other 3 players. Since it was only 9 holes, our best player took holes 1, 5 and 9. The 9 holes were still going to apply to the last day's final event, so everyone still wanted to shoot their best... that's exactly what I did. I put up my best 9 hole score ever, finishing with a 40. Not only that, I had birdies with both of my pink ball holes and carried as the best score on most of the others. 1 of the birdies was a chip from 15' or so over a small hill, off of the green. Our other 2 players (1 shot a 62 for reference) didn't help much at all, so the game was still close as we came down to the last hole. We were the last group coming in this time. The 9th was a par 5 and Keith, our top player, hit a solid drive about 290. There was water on the left side of the fairway about 180 yards ahead and we knew we had a good score, so we decided that he should layup to 165 to 170 and take the wedge in. Unfortunately, he hit it 181... into the edge of the water. Of course the gallery is ahead giving us a hard time, but little do they know that I had just had a lights out round and we might still be ok. So Keith, being a smartass, drops a ball right before water and yells back to them, no pressure here... then nails it from 80 out, right in front of everyone. When we get up there, all someone had to do was double bogey for the 2nd score to win it. Easy money and 2 crazy moments and a career best 9 all in 1 trip. It made it pretty easy to deal with the back issues at this point. All worth it.

Day 4 - Kearney Hill
If you're ever in the area, play this course. My expectation was that it would be something like Big Blue after seeing that course. Oh no, it's absolutely awesome. There is a cool champions board when you pull in and when you walk to the back of the large white club house, there are rockers on the upper and lower patio that give you the feeling of Pinehurst. The staff was excellent, food was great and the picture from that back patio was incredible. It's a full on links style course that uses various ponds to give you the edging effect. There's enough wind that sweeps through the valley to make up for the fact that's not on a large natural body of water. We've played some great courses over the years, but I really liked what this one had to offer. They could use some maintenance on their deck/patio area and a couple of the paths, but that's really nitpicking. It was an excellent course to finish on.

Our last day is divided into 'flights' of players and those groups play against each other with a small handicap in each one. With all of the issues I had coming in, I just assumed I'd be in the C group, but my crazy play on the previous day was enough to get me into the B group. I was really just happy to make it into that group. Also in the group was last year's A group winner and the guy that is typically our best golfer. He made the mistake of buying a new driver about 2 weeks ago and it was definitely causing some issues.

I didn't really know what to think at this point, so I just went out and hoped that I could continue what I started the previous day. Sure enough, I was getting similar results. I finished my front 9 with a 47, then put up a 44 on the back for a 91. I ended up finishing in 3rd in the group and couldn't be happier. The former A group player shot an 84, his best round of the trip and the guy I was riding with shot an 89, his best round ever. When we totaled up the scores of each group, our B group beat the A group for this year by 14 strokes. So those guys ended up being good sports at picked up the tab at Titled Kilt on the way home.

(I'll have to tell the story about my friend having the girls take a picture with his Tesla... Kentucky Tilted Kilt waitresses asking about that car was something to behold)

All in all, it was an incredibly fun weekend and even though I had no business trying to golf with my back in that condition, I'd do it again. I think I learned a lot about my golf game and stuff I've learned over the last few years that will only make me better in the future.

Plus, now I have a pretty good idea of how I'm going to golf when I'm 60!

TL;DR
- I went on a golf trip
- I hurt my back
- I shot incredibly well while enduring crippling pain
- I had an awesome time
- Kentucky chicks are dumb

Was perusing this wall of words being incredibly jealous that you have good enough friends to take an annual golf trip with and was very depressed until this made me smile a tad.

Awesome stuff and now you are free to begin to facilitate the NDL version for 2017!

I think Jordan wins this thing. I am hoping Rickie can get his 1st. Hopefully one of the two can win it.

So cool to see the different stages of fatherhood we are all in and how far we have come since the beginning of this thing.

I was on 18 green for the final hole of regulation and the playoff. Right by the tv tower. Had a perfect view of both Sergio putts. Crazy.

The putt in regulation that he missed was the quietest I've ever heard an outdoor space. You could have actually heard a pin drop. It was crazy.
