Stock Market

Post by dusters06 »

So I'm beginning to mess around in the stock market. Very minor compared to some of you I'm sure. I figure betting a dime on my Colts at -3.5 each week isn't exactly setting me up for success, so change of plans. For those with the experience and know how, are there any good resources you could point me towards? Books, videos, etc.

For a minimal $2k-$3k investment, anything anyone is watching closely or expecting good things out of?

I'm sure there's a thread somewhere on here regarding this but I went back about 7 pages and found nothing.

We need to look and see how much a runner service is.. Not sure I want to ask my Pops to make that drive 17 times.... at least not with his schedule.

if your thinking is 'instead of betting on football, let me get involved in the stock market' you're probably not off to a very good start.

read how to make money in stocks by William O'Neil.

Once you complete that task, i'll help you in private.

the stock market isn't some get rich quick scheme, its a lot of hard work, pain, persistence and self evaluation. you'll learn more about yourself in the process than you will about stocks. i'm here if you want the help, but its not going to be the type of training you expect.

Dave, I read something the other day that basically said by the time your in your 40's you should have approximately 3x's your yearly salary put up in retirement. By the time your in your 50's it should be around 4 to 5x's your salary.

This kind of scared me, don't think I'm doing horrible but I'm not at that mark (40's). Would you agree with that assessment? Should it be that number at the end of your 40's?

i would say that's about accurate.

be careful when you 'read stuff'. many articles are written by people/companies promoting a narrative and/or trying to scare people. fear sells... i'd go as far to say 85% of the stuff you'll read online is complete bullshit. There are basic principles that are sound for anyone... put a set amount away every month, quarter, year. diversify broadly. re balance it quarterly or at worst 2 times per year. don't leave all your money in the bank not collecting any returns, don't pay crazy fees. don't get into stock picking until you have discretionary income that you can afford to lose.

people get so caught up in trying to do things 'perfectly' that they miss the overall premise of what they are trying to accomplish. you don't need someone like me to make you money, really wealthy people work with me to keep them on path over time. i don't have any more or less of a clue of what happens next than anyone else... that's a little bit of hyperbole, but its mostly true and perfectly fine.

with individual stocks thats a totally different game... and not something i'd advise without ALOT of time commitment and a good mentor. i actually think most of the guys in the league would be excellent traders. there are a ton of similarities in stocks as there are to video games. someone like BigMike would probably be an incredible trader over time. i've actually thought about telling him to come work for me in the past. but homeboy made fun of spinach pies one too many times, so i question his loyalty.

i'm not really into openly talking about work stuff on the forums, bc i'm not really supposed to. but if you want to PM or text me, i'm always happy to help where i can.

I appreciate it. I'll check it for sure. I'm not looking to get rich quick and made the football comment basically saying it's time I start doing something better with my money. I'm willing to put in the work as I enjoy to challenge myself, just need to work on the discipline.

Thanks again
