Tax Prep

What do you guys use for tax prep now a days?
I normally brought it to HR Block back in the day but that seems wasteful even though I always got nice returns I paid a lot.

I don't have anything complex besides maybe a house sale, car purchase, and daycare credits so not sure which online service is the easiest now.

I see Turbo Tax, Quicken, and HR Block online which may be easiest if they have all my information.

TurboTax since 2003.

The year I bought my first house, I figured it may be best to let someone do it, and I did. That was the only year since 2003 I didn't use TurboTax. For the heck of it, after i got my H&R Block refund amount, I input all my info into TurboTax without submitting, I woulda got the same exact return had I done it on my own and saved the fee from having H&R doing it. Decided then I'm gonna do it on my own pretty much no matter what going forward.

Very cool. Yea I haven't done it on my own in about 5 years but I have also gotten a ton of tax credits with school, daycare, car purchases, etc so I wasn't sure how to ever handle those but it seems that I am at a simpler stage and will give it a whirl on my own.

The consensus online is Turbo Tax is the best.

Basically the same a shel. Converted to TurboTax when my Intuit rep started giving me free copies many years ago while I was managing a CompUSA. I tried Kiplinger's TaxCut (pretty sure it's HR Block now)... wasn't impressed.

You will get a larger refund with TurboTax. HR Block (on-site) is so overly careful to protect their ass.

My wife and I have gone through tons of "complicated" things from major medical deductions, building a home, tons of charitable work and donations, DFS income, miscellaneous contract based work, her working out of the home and dealing with numerous special circumstances for that... it's all been easy to handle on TurboTax. I highly recommend it.

The only downside is that it used to be about $40 to get the software and file... I think it normally runs me around $80 for software and filing now.

I used TaxSlayer this year and was pleased with it, although this was the first time I didnt have someone else do them for me. I read up a lot on tax code and tax law over the last year or so and was going to do it myself, but figured for the roughly $25 Id rather just let the software sort through it (I know the taxes enough to know what I should be expecting, but dont want to deal with the paperwork).

I got a sizable refund this year, but hoping to optimize my withholdings for 2016 so that its as close to zero as possible

Turbo Tax for some time now. Would have to look thru my emails and files on my computer to say for how long but it's been since 2007 at least. Even when I bought my house did it myself and had no issues.

Next year I may take it to someone though. Especially if I get over 330 days out of the country working. Then anything under $100,800 is tax free, just have to file the right forms and what not. May reach out to Luis, if I remember right when we met he said his wife did taxes, and keep the money in the NDL family.

Go talk to someone you trust.
There are tons of ways you can buy things for your rental property to claim on your taxes.


For my personal taxes, I have also used Turbo Tax for may years.
