Multiple monitors

Post by Weasel »

Old computer took a dump, got a new tower. Also received a used monitor from a friend, so Im trying to go from 2 to a 3 monitor setup. Any ideas on the best way to do this?

Back of tower: HDMI and VGA outputs
3 identical monitors: DVI and VGA inputs

My old tower had a DVI and VGA output, so I just ran a VGA from one monitor and DVI from the other into a DVI adapter (pictured) which went to the tower. Obviously new tower lacks the DVI so I dont have that option.

Can I get away with this same setup, only adding a DVI to HDMI converter? That would take care of 2 monitors, then I can just run the 3rd VGA straight to the tower. Would this work?

Not sure how the splitter works. My graphics card has the dual monitor output to properly configure the layout.

Right, I dont think getting 2 is an issue at all, but adding the third is getting a little tricky. From what Ive read simply splitting a VGA will just clone a display instead of extending it, which is why Im not simply splitting a VGA for two and converting a DVI to HDMI for the third.

yeah, you can split using that adaptor, but after that, you have to have another video card to use to supply the other monitor(s).
They make USB video adaptors that are pretty cheap and simple.

We use them for teachers at work.
Plug them in, download the driver and then they can use 2 different monitors.

I'm pretty sure I read up on my video card and saw it could support three monitors, maybe I'm wrong though. I bought a couple adapters and such so I'll find out soon enough
