College Decision....................
College Decision....................
I know a few of you know that my son has been gong through the meat market call basketball recruiting. After taking a visit to Manhattan this past weekend, he has decided to attend Columbia to continue his basketball career. He turned down alot of great schools, but he made a life time decision not just a 4 year decision.
Here are a few highlights:

Smart kid and Larranaga probably took it pretty hard.
Best of luck to him and I bet you are a proud dad.

Yeah, like Ted said, that's one heck of an education. He will be able to do just about anything he wants after college. Congratulations to the both of you! I think I speak for everyone here when we say we will be rooting for him when they play

That's so cool. An education for free from a school like that is priceless IMO. Hope to check him out on TV sometime.
Re: College Decision....................
congrats man.
i always wondered how it worked with the Ivy league athletes, do they just work with you in other packages of financial aid? or does he qualify for academic scholarships? if you don't mind me asking

Re: College Decision....................
Not sure how his works but with football there are no actual athletic scholarships for Ivy League schools abut special financial aid packages and financial help they can provide to make it cheaper than some other kids would get it. Not sure how it works with basketball or if it is the same.DRiccio21 wrote:congrats man.

Re: College Decision....................
i got recruited by Brown but they basically said i wasn't going to get more than a few thousand dollars in financial aid and my family couldn't afford it and i was petrified to take on debt.
i don't regret it but i always wondered how some of the kids afforded it.

We have had two players go Ivy since I've coached, one to Harvard, one to Cornell. Both were not wealthy families but certainly not poor. They offer certain things/packages but it certainly is not cheap. I think different sports are offered different kinds of help as well....DRiccio21 wrote:i got recruited by Brown but they basically said i wasn't going to get more than a few thousand dollars in financial aid and my family couldn't afford it and i was petrified to take on debt.

Re: College Decision....................
Same for me except it was Harvard, Dartmouth, and Cornell. My mom talked to the guy from Dartmouth on the phone and asked about grants and aid and laughed out loud when he told her the costs. My former brother in law graduated from Yale Medical School and has an awesome job but is still looking at a decade or more to get his debt down.DRiccio21 wrote:i got recruited by Brown but they basically said i wasn't going to get more than a few thousand dollars in financial aid and my family couldn't afford it and i was petrified to take on debt.

Re: College Decision....................
Wow. That's impressive. Good luck to him at Columbia. Great choice!
Re: College Decision....................
The way it works is it's a financial aid package. Columbia just changed their policies this year to get the students more in their packages. Right now worst case it's going to cost be about 4k per year. But now he can use outside scholarships that he couldn't use at the other schools recruiting him, because they cover 100%. Columbia is looking for outside scholarships for him and my wife is also. More likely than not it won't cost us anything. The school is great in that aspect. The coaches came after him hard and they really waned him.DRiccio21 wrote:congrats man.

now comes preparing him for life as a college athlete.
something i wish i had someone do for me when i went to school. sports changes so much when your coach feeds his family based on how you perform.

Re: College Decision....................
I know a lot of people in human resources and admissions at Columbia. Let me know if he needs a friendly face; not that he will need one if he is playing ball, but nevertheless.
Edit: Just in case you were groaning... One of them is my sister. They aren't all drunken idiots lol.
