24 here as well, too. We have to go on Memorial day due to a "bad weather" day we had in the winter.

Re: Teachers
So I'm curious... what do you all think about common core and standardized testing?

I like the "why is that the answer" stuff. Causes a deeper level of understanding. Outside of that. Mehhhhhh

Re: Teachers
I'm not really familiar with it. I've heard some discussions amongst family (a lot of teachers), but never jumped into it. I just brought it up because of an article I saw on Yahoo this morning with a school teacher in NY ranting about it.
I would think that an annual standardized test is applicable. Seems to make sense to judge pace.

Re: Teachers
How many of you as kids took the California Achievement Test (Cat)? And do they still do that?

Re: Teachers
its the FCAT here in FL. This is its last year. In this state they are going to every class having a standardized EOC (end of course) exam.

Re: Teachers
We have ISTEP. Elementary school also has an I-Read test they have to pass. Then we also do the EOC's.

I like common core.
I have found any teachers who are in their late 40's hate common core because now they actually have to come up with some new lessons instead of using the same old recycled bull shit. Just my opinion.

Re: Teachers
Since I started teaching we have had a state test required for graduation.ajalves wrote:its the FCAT here in FL. This is its last year. In this state they are going to every class having a standardized EOC (end of course) exam.
First it was WASL, then we went to HSPE, then we went to EOC in math and science, now we are moving to the Common Core test called the SBAC. It's getting ridiculous. And we are accountable based on the test scores. When are parents accountable? Students?
I can lose my job based on a kids assessment, but a bad parent doesn't care about that. When they start charging kids families for failed tests, my guess we would have a little more student/parent accountability...

You hit the nail on the head here. School, for some parents, is just a form of free child care.cougnix wrote:Since I started teaching we have had a state test required for graduation.ajalves wrote:its the FCAT here in FL. Re: Teachers
Education is something where I am probably naive. For some reason, I generally trust that all teachers (that aren't football coaches, haha) will put forth a good amount of effort to help the kids learn. That these teachers aren't there to only collect a pay check and have the summers off. I find it pretty hard to believe that they put in that much time to go to school and pay for it, knowing that they are never going to get rich doing it.

Don't get me wrong, there are more dedicated to kids teachers than not, but there are definitely the few that don't put in work. I've gone through different transitions because teaching Math is so hard. Kids fall into different categories: Brainwashed into think they can't do it, Are good at it, not good or bad but need to work at it. More and more because of culture and society are feeling that Math is the impossible subject that nobody really needs.
