I am almost never in a vehicle.

Edit: Correction ... I am almost never in an attack vehicle. I like jeeps, bikes, and transport boats.

You get the first RPG pretty quickly and the first anti-air a little after that. Only Engineers have rockets, though.

The good and bad news about aerial attacks is that there is a stark difference between the quality of pilots. Basically, 1% vs 99%. The 1% is really, really fucking good and almost nothing you do short of a combined effort of multiple teammates is going to stop that prick. The other 99%? You can almost ignore them and continue about your day. They are gnats.

Yeah, we ran into a guy last night who went 29-1 in a stealth jet on Paracel Storm. He was near impossible to take down, and he was destroying everything he saw.

He has over 2400 kills in jets.

RPG is the first launcher you'll unlock. The SRAW is the 4th, it is a wire-guided so you can guide it into a helicopter if you can aim it well enough and they hover.

Stinger and IGLA are after that, they are anti aircraft. Stinger is fire and forget, lower damage; IGLA requires a lock maintained, but does more damage.

After that you get the mines....and that's where the fun begins :D

FWIW, the unlock system scares away noob gamers since it favors the experienced

Fun = trolling that Trendon/I do all the time w slam mines near bases, slam mines on vehicles + RPGs, etc. There's still fun to be had.

And you're in the same boat I was when I started, I was overwhelmed. Trendon is a big source of knowledge, I'll be happy to pass along any advice I can as well. It took me about two weeks to get things down.

What I would recommend is to go to the training area and learn how to fly, learn how to drive vehicles, etc. As you unlock things on tanks, weapons, etc, you will get more accustomed to everything.

If you want to level up guns quickly, play things like Domination or Deathmatch. If you want to level up tools and gadgets, play Conquest or Rush. And make sure to focus on capturing and defending when you have a vehicle, rather than killing people, it'll get you more points and level you up quicker.

Hoos wrote:How big are the maps compared to COD?

Much much larger, but you can choose where you spawn.

You can spawn on:

-- Your home base
-- A member of your squad (squad can have 5 people)
-- A base that you control, or an open vehicle at that base
-- A helicopter/boat/tank w an open seat
-- A mobile spawn beacon (recon team members can deploy these almost anywhere on the map)

This is why performing a squad wipe (killing the last member alive on a squad) is important on some maps, because it severely limits where people can spawn after the wipe. The maps are big, but unless your team is just being destroyed, you can spawn all over the place. And w vehicles, it doesn't take long to get from one side to the other.

My first week sucked, but once you get some stuff unlocked and find your niche, it works well. Just have to find your guy and go with it. Trendon, shift, and MPFSU are great guys to learn from and are on a good bit. Obviously jay can help you too

Ya know, it took me almost a year to figure out why the fuck I kept getting points for SQUAD WIPE when I just started the game and killed one guy. I kept thinking, "Man, that's a small squad!"

AJ, another thing you can do to help yourself level up faster, and help the team

When you see an enemy soldier, boat, vehicle, or aircraft, aim at them and hit R1. This will "spot" them for your teammates and tell them that (sniper/plane/tank) is located to the (east/west/etc) of them, and will spot them on the map. If someone kills that person or destroys that vehicle, you get points. Also, it helps people find someone who might kill you. You'll earn spotting ribbons which gets you bonus points.

Also I was looking at the order of the launchers/weapons on Engineer. The actual order of unlock is:

Repair Tool
M15 Anti Tank mine
Carbine (unlocks the carbine rifles across all classes)
Stinger (anti-air, fire/forget)
Offensive perks
RPG
IGLA (anti-air, must hold lock until it hits target)
Mechanic perks
M2 slam (anti-tank mine, about to be nerfed but still fun)
EOD bot (remote-controlled robot that damages vehicles and captures points on Rush)
SMAW launcher
Antitank Perks
Javelin
SRAW

Per Battlelog today:

BALANCING ITEMS WE ARE MONITORING
1) Players have suggested that the TV missiles be allowed to 1 hit kill enemy aircraft. While we initially considered increasing their damage to 90% from 80%, we decided against this change. The TV missile is not intended to be an anti-aircraft weapon system, and while skilled players may currently be able to use it that way, we do not find its current damage level to be imbalanced.

2) Players have also suggested that Sniper Rifle and 12G SLUG rounds be allowed to penetrate body armor at close range. The purpose of body armor is to specifically counter these kinds of threats, and players with these weapons have received significant buffs to accuracy to allow them to achieve close range headshots with higher frequency. Finally, the goal of 12G SLUGS is a long range alternative for shotguns, players wishing to defeat body armor at close range with shotguns should utilize the 12G FLECHETTE rounds instead.

3) As a capable all around weapon, players have suggested the GALIL ACE 23 is over powered. Players of specific types, especially competitive players, will gravitate towards a weapon that can work in any situation. The ACE 23 is out performed at close range, long range, and has competitors at medium range. We see no need for a change at this time.

4) Below Radar has been a hot topic, asking why it was “removed” from BF4. Below Radar was never a part of the original design for BF4’s locking mechanics, and while we have discussed allowing a low altitude state to cause lock on to take longer, the added frustration of being unable to lock on to targets does not offset the added danger to helicopters at low altitude. Furthermore, having a low altitude state only affect PASSIVE or ACTIVE radar missiles would add additional confusion, as it did in BF3 when stingers still worked on Below Radar vehicles.

5) Long Range scopes for DMRs were tested extensively internally before release. We specifically removed these scopes from those weapons as we found any class being able to effectively snipe was detrimental to the overall pace and gameplay of BF4. We have no intentions of adding those scopes to DMRs for BF4.

6) As a guaranteed get out of jail free card, aircraft counter measures are only designed to allow a vehicle to escape distant danger, not to enable the aircraft to be immune to lock on weaponry. While this is a tricky balance, we’re currently happy with the reload times and amounts of counter measures carried by aircraft.

7) MAA is too powerful against the AC130 and other ground vehicles. The reduction to the range of the MAA cannons should address the issue of the AC130, and at this time we feel that the balance between MAA and other ground vehicles is appropriate.

8) Ground destruction makes vehicle driving difficult after significant combat. We’re happy that the dynamic aspect of BF4 has a direct impact on the gameplay, and at the moment do not think this is in need of any tweaks.

9) Some players have been disappointed in the rate of fire of the G36C carbine, citing it being different from BF3. We understand the feelings of fans when their favorite gun doesn’t work in the same way it was before, however BF4 is its own game, with its own balance, and all weapons received various changes and balance factors. We do not intend to change the rate of fire of the G36C.

10) Attack helicopter maneuverability is also a hot topic. We’re open to the idea that the Attack Helicopters could benefit from an increase in speed and maneuverability. At the moment, we’ve made tweaks to the primary threats for Attack Helicopters, and we want to see how that change affects the battlefield before we make additional changes blindly.

They did fix one thing that was extremely broken: the mobile anti-air could hit shit 600 meters away without locking on.

No, they looked, they investigated, and they nixed some, made some changes already (prior to this post), and are monitoring others. Unlike COD, they don't just throw a blind fix out. Like w helicopters--they just made a change to weapons, so they want to see if making them more agile would make them overpowered before they make a change to how they fly.
