When the wheels of Scott Schieffer’s airplane touched the ground at his destination, something didn’t seem right.

“We landed very abruptly with the pilot applying the brakes very hard. We smelled burnt rubber from the stop,” he told me privately over Twitter.

The flight, Southwest Airlines LUV +1.3% 4013, which left from Chicago’s Midway airport this afternoon was originally scheduled to fly to Dallas with a stop in Branson, Missouri (BKG) but instead, the aircraft touched down at Taney County Airport (PLK), 8.6 miles away from its intermediate stop. According to airportguide.com, PLK’s runway is about half the length of BKG’s at 3738 feet versus 7140 feet.

Mr. Scheiffer, a Dallas tax attorney and CPA reported that that crew and passengers remained calm and professional during the erroneous landing, saying “The flight attendants are now passing out peanuts liberally. Everyone is in good spirits, but we haven’t heard anything from the pilot,” adding “the pilot keeps repeating, ‘we apologize for the inconvenience.’”

Only after unloading the plane, did Mr. Scheiffer notice the gravity of the situation, noting “we have all deplaned from @SouthwestAir 4013, and the mood is somber now that we realized we were 40 feet from the edge of a cliff.”

Since the runway at PLK is so short, flight 4013 will be unable to depart immediately from the airport, so passengers are currently in the process of being reaccommodated to their destinations. That process will likely be ongoing through the evening.

This isn’t the first time that a large aircraft has landed at the wrong airport. Last year, a Boeing BA -0.16% Dreamlifter made headlines for landing at the wrong airport in Wichita, KS and safely left shortly after.

As far as the source of this error, it is unclear whether the pilot or the dispatcher directed the aircraft to the wrong airport, but when flying with Visual Flight Rules it can be easy to mistake one airfield for another when aloft.

Kent Wien, a commercial pilot who pens the popular blog Cockpit Chronicles agrees.

“When the conditions are clear, a visual approach is a common way to transition from the arrival to a landing. Coming in from the north, it would be easy to mistake these two airports, as the smaller field would appear before the destination. This is more likely when a flight isn’t backed up with an instrument approach for reference, even though the two runways are six miles apart in this case.”

Southwest Airlines will no doubt issue a statement on the incident later in the evening. In the meantime, there are some very unhappy passengers stranded in Taney County.

The number of dumbshit scientific studies that happen is ridiculous. If I could find it I would post it but there was a study by some university that went out to find what activity people do most in their beds. The answer: sleeping.

Reminds of my ER days. I've seen every possible ridiculous patient complaint out there, but none tops this one: "Pt states sleepy after taking Ambien."

Mind you, this patient came in around 3am...by ambulance :|

Ms. Lowry’s cautionary tale seems to have made an impression on at least some viewers. A new economic study of Nielsen television ratings and birth records suggests that the show she appeared in, “16 and Pregnant,” and its spinoffs may have prevented more than 20,000 births to teenage mothers in 2010.
The paper, to be released Monday by the National Bureau of Economic Research, makes the case that the controversial but popular programs reduced the teenage birthrate by nearly 6 percent, contributing to a long-term decline that accelerated during the recession.
Wait, what?

No cautionary tale for me... my wife will turn it on in the background and I just look over long enough to laugh at how stupid they are. Or maybe that's Teen Mom... idk.. one of those shows.
