My step-father just went through The James not too long ago. They found the cancer, took out his thyroid, and now he is 100% cancer free. And all of this happened within 3-4 months, and he missed one day of work. Pretty solid if you ask me.buckeye76 wrote:Komen is extortion? (enlightening?) Curious to hear your thoughts since where you work. The James is almost in my back yard...........Cnasty wrote:Working for one of the larger cancer centers in the nation and doing some research on this was pretty enlightening to say the least.fsupenguin wrote:Don't even get my started on Komen bs, it's strait up extortion at this point.

I'm not sure of the exact number but I've heard that 10% or less of the money raised by them actually goes to any research or treatment.fsupenguin wrote:Don't even get my started on Komen bs, it's strait up extortion at this point.

Everything I have ever read runs directly counter to that. They straight-up lie about cancer statistics so I wouldn't imagine lying about their books would be too hard.brwnbear wrote:http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.c ... orgid=4509LetsGoPeay wrote:I'm not sure of the exact number but I've heard that 10% or less of the money raised by them actually goes to any research or treatment.fsupenguin wrote:Don't even get my started on Komen bs, it's strait up extortion at this point.

Cancer is big business these days, and there are people in the business of truly curing forms of cancer. Komen is in the business of treatment. The few people I know personally in this field absolutely do not trust Komen and see them purely as an entity that is focused on self preservation.
Re: 2013 College Football Season
Yeah, the fact you can't use "for the cure" in your business/drive name or, for the most part, use any ribbons without getting a C&D is pretty fucked up. Then there was their fight with Planned Parenthood.fsupenguin wrote:Cancer is big business these days, and there are people in the business of truly curing forms of cancer. "Founder and CEO of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Nancy Brinker, received a 64% raise in 2012, bringing along with it a salary of $684,000 a year.
“This pay package is way outside the norm,” said Ken Berger, CEO of Charity Navigator, an organization that evaluates charities. “It’s about a quarter of a million dollars more than what we see for charities of this size. … This is more than the head of the Red Cross is making for an organization that is one-tenth the size of the Red Cross.”"

I saw where OL John Moffitt retired from the Broncos. I was reminded by a recruiting story about Moffitt. UVA recruited Moffitt and he came down for the FSU game. This was back in 05 when UVA actually fielded a football team. FSU was ranked in the top 5. UVA ends up beating FSU and everybody is going wild. Everybody, except Moffitt. Apparently, Moffitt was all bent out of shape because during the game he had to stand in line for a hotdog instead of somebody getting a hotdog for him. Immediately after the game, he drops UVA from consideration.

I've always heard good things, but I thought they were in the business of treatment. So the cure thing is mis-leading. Interesting to hear what you and others have said.trendon wrote:Everything I have ever read runs directly counter to that. I had thought about taking my kids to that game last night. My two oldest kids had basketball practice though and it poured all night long. Ball State could very well beat NIU next week. They good.shel311 wrote:
