Re: Peru
Make sure you are using a large national bank for your debit card. Regional banks may use a different system that doesnt work in South America. Call your provider to obtain cell service. Verizon offers international rates. Otherwise, go to your local repair shop and have your phone unlocked and buy prepaid cards when you get down there.
When you get to the hotel - ask for a phone number for a taxi - always call for a pick-up - try to avoid picking one up off the streets.

Re: Peru
You gonna visit a llama farm?
Good resource for you:
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_t ... s_998.html
From what I'm seeing, Peru is relatively safe, just do the normal stuff
Don't ride buses
Don't have expensive gadgets, cameras, jewelry, etc exposed (so hide the wife's ring, maybe)
Don't take dark streets
Don't get taxis off the street, get official ones by phone (as Gabe pointed out)
Stay alert
From what I've gathered online, the country is very friendly and very safe, especially the area around the ruins. I'm jealous you get to visit that. The Incans fascinate me.

Peruvian food is great. I haven't been, but I've had some friends food. Just dive in and enjoy, ask what it is later (probably nothing too crazy).
I hear the pre-dawn walk up above Machu Pichu gives amazing views of it with the sunrise. And there are virtually no crowds then

Its kind of humbling seeing those historically significant places. Such a cool experience.DRiccio21 wrote:you know thats my rule... but they didn't have any there for me to wear. i took another one later on with some native gear onCnasty wrote:Very disappointed you didnt don some of the garb of the native country but holding the lamb redeemed yourself tenfold.

Did the natives give you a nickname while down there?

Re: Peru
I just noticed that your leg is slightly lifted, hand on the waist, the wife is bent over in front of you, and you are giving it to her while holding a lamb.
Screw native gear,good job.
Though highly unintentional, it works.

- had a great time, actually shaved the beard off today. had it for about 8 months now (hadn't trimmed it at all in last month)
- humbling is a great word for it. some people say they have spiritual experiences there, i didn't at all. but i certainly took a moment to reflect how small we are and how tiny a part of the history of our earth we all are... the shit the incans did was mind blowing.
- no nicknames, just called 'gringo' by a few young kids in the city as i walked around with my camera, but thats nothing i'm not used to in Miami

Re: Peru
glad you guys had fun. My Captain at work went to Peru last year. He was there for hiking and what not. He told a couple of pretty funny late night bar establishments. But loved it himself.

Re: Peru
that......is probably the single greatest stance I've seen in the history of NDL
From the lifted flip flop foot, to the hand on hip, to the fedora, to the beard to the baby lamb to the sun flare across the pic
if you dont think im posing like this in ANY and ALL future NDL gatherings you are sorely mistaken
