Help, laptop is on the outs
Help, laptop is on the outs
Laptop keeps getting a blue screen and then dying. It will boot up sometimes and sometimes it will do a disc check and something about media cable disconnected. Can this be fixed or do I have to break down and buy another laptop?

Re: Help, laptop is on the outs
Media cable disconnected is prob the Network cable. My simple answer is if you have the disks that the laptop came with boot to the Windows one to reinstall Windows. I usually use the option to reformat the drive. You will lose everything but screw fighting the blue screen. It can actually mean many things and I hate wasting time trying to figure out WTF the problem is.
If you do the reinstall you will also need the drivers disk.

To be more accurate, death to the (software) operating system on your box; your laptop itself is likely in pristine condition.ajalves wrote:blue screen usually = death

Re: Help, laptop is on the outs
hold down F-10 when after you turn on your laptop and the system restore stuff is there sometimes.

Re: Help, laptop is on the outs
Should have metioned that but I did a system restore and lost everything. It's crazy because it will boot and works great but then it will just die. Could this be a heat issue?

Re: Help, laptop is on the outs
I prefer the 'SledgeHammer' technique myself. I fought the blue screen of death with a laptop a few years back. I went and bought an Apple laptop afterwards. I have had no problem since.

My sis-in-law is in the same boat. I'm more than willing to bet your problem is a hard drive that is failing.beercop wrote:Laptop keeps getting a blue screen and then dying. FYI: If you decide to replace the hard drive, remember laptops typically take 2.5 inch drives. Her laptop is fairly old, but a 160GB drive at BestBuy is $68. I'm sure I could find a better deal online, but she wants it fixed ASAP.
