I think Reign said it another thread, you are gonna have guys who actually run the spread option and throw everything at you, then you are going to have guys who lean on this one play because it is easy to run. If that is basically the only one they are using, it is pretty easy to stop.

Also, the counter, buck sweep, off tackle, and even jet sweeps all have read plays in some formation or another.

This is one play (not the only one by any means) I think EA really screwed up. The DE just sits there and waits to get kicked out. No DE does that in CFB, and if he does, he's not playing for long. No squeeze, no wrong-arm, just sit and come get me. awful.

I modified UK's book (all pistol and shotgun) and took out many of the PA plays and added in options. I run a true spread option look w UK; but almost every single run (especially in pistol) looks like an option.

Now, I have read options, dart options, counter options, blast options, inline option, etc....pretty much every option type you can put in there, and not all of them work very well all the time; outside of the read option, you have to really call it at the right time and read the defense right. Soemone runs a fully diverse option game like that, I see no problem w it.

All good stuff in here.. Good conversation. I've been questioned a lot about over-using the read option, and it's for good reason. The fact that they made a lot of the "straight runs" look exactly like a read play, just without the read, is both good and bad. Good, in the sense that you can now set up your opponent using a true Spread Option Scheme. But bad, in the sense that you will probably get accused of running the read option every damn play. Which, for most of us, just isn't the truth.

I run probably about 30% read option out of all my running plays. The rest are Buck Sweeps, Counters, Inside Zones, Dives, Off Tackles, etc..

I'm with jsence, I don't see a problem with running a true Spread Option Scheme, just as I wouldn't have a problem with someone running a Power-I Smashmouth Offense, or a 4/5 Wide Air Raid Offense... They are all legit, true College Football Offensive Schemes. Just mix up your play calls, and keep the defense off balance.

I am with twista till the last paragraph. This is not real life, this is a game and sometimes certain offenses exploit a games weakness.

I think guys not knowing how to stop or contain a spread option is different from exploiting an AI weakness.

It's not just about stopping the read option though.. It is about having to stop the entire run game. So I don't really see how that is breaking AI. It is just difficult to defend... Just like it is in College Football

Not commenting on a particular offense. The " it happens in real life so its okay to do it in the game" is my objection. Run whatever just don't exploit AI flaws.

Would you consider having aggressive on for always going after QB on option an exploit since players actually are supposed to be fooled by the read option.

Not sure about an exploit, but definitely not using a tactic in moderation.

And I agree. With the advent of custom playbooks there are alot more variations in possible formations and offense types. To me, it seems ridiculous that someone would run I-form, Double-Wing Option, Shotgun, Pistol, Single Back, Heavy 3 Back all in the same playbook. To each his own, but damn there is no way a team could practice and focus on all of those offensive styles. If we wanted to get into the sim/str8 discussion about the whole thing, the only way there would ever be any way to control it would be to limit the offensive styles in a playbook. I personally have Shotgun forms, Pistol and Maryland I for short yardage. 3 packages, that's all. I'm not complaining, but just throwing it out there as a discussion piece to the topic...

HIT THIS right on the button here.

And the fact of the matter is when no other OPTION play is ran....and they are running the QB read...not triple, no jet sweep, nothing, just the regular read option....IDK, I don't buy it. But to each his own I guess. I LOVE playing guys who run true offenses..if your a power running team, you do it, if you want to run out of the spread, you do it properly, not just the same 3 plays. And Jsense, I would love to play a true spread option attack, I try it with ARMY in our online dyansty, and I am horrid at it haha.

That's the thing--it SAYS "play the qb" but that's not what it does. It plays the first option instead. So aggressive will see you go after the HB on hand off options, and after the QB on speed options. So this is truly a risk/reward strategy.

Plus I dont feel that's an exploit. As a coach, wouldnt I get to tell my team how we are going to play the option???? If I want the DE to take the back and user a LB or safety to take the QB, should I have that option??? Thats completely realistic. Coaches dont just let their players decide who to get and he has no idea whats going on. I feel like EA was right with that feature, at least we get to pick our poison, unlike last year.

I don't know, I know people I've played has set that setting to aggressive for most of all the game, and I have watched the DEs sit down every time on QB. Whether it was a Read Option, Triple, or Speed. The only time I have ever seen them to follow the RB went set to aggressive if it was a DE or LB with low awareness/ play reaction.

As far as running plays that have no option, straight hands offs like inside zone.. etc.. As far as I can the setting for aggressive or conservative has no effect on the play, they are left unblocked and their reaction is random, but usually sit on the qb.

Here's how I see it somebody runs the same play over and over and I can't stop it that's on me. Hell I wish somebody would try running the same play over and over again that would make my job easier.

the defense in this game is broken, hence why we are seeing games get into the 60's on both sides in some games. I just chalk up this game to EA wanting an offensive game this year and that's what it is. The spread and read type offenses are the flavor of the month, and maybe EA will put out a patch to counter them, but I highly doubt it, so just get used to it I say.

Ya'll love Offense way too much - Defense is where da party's at.

You want to scout the Hokies!? Go look at their Default PB - been using dat bitch since 1999. It embodies the true spirit of Hokienation. We smash together as few plays as possible with no imagination so our Defense can play more 8-)
