Data and HD Transfer

Post by Downing11 »

It appears as if my PS3 is on its way out. No YLOD but it sounds like a jet ready to take off after about 20 minutes of play. If I back up my system to an external hard drive and buy a new PS3, is it possible to restore all of the data from my old one to my new one? Will I also have to physically swap out the HDD to the new PS3? Basically I want to keep all the files / saves / songs from old to new. Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes.

It is pretty simple. If that page isn't too clear just do a quick google search. I backed up all my stuff to an external USB HD and then transferred it all to the new slim when mine was going down for the first time.

Thanks. I just want to make sure I get everything moved prior to this thing dying and losing everything.

Just do what I did:

1) put on on ebay (especially if it's back compatable), put a few old games w it, HDMI cable, etc....get a good price for it
2) use that money, go buy a slim
3) get a USB to USB cable, xfer all the data using the PSN utility
4) wipe old PS3, ship out

No external HDD needed.

I like it. It is backwards compatible with a 250HDD, I upgraded from the 60 it came with. What do you think I could get on ebay ?

Since I already have an external HDD, I figure I'd give that a shot. I just started it now and it is saying it will take "approximately 1 hour and 32 minutes". Is that normal?

Bring on more downloadable games.
I just upgraded my PS3's hard drive today.

It was simple to do and I had a laptop that died, so I had an extra hard drive sitting around.

When I transferred my old data to my new PS3 it said it would take about 2 hours....in actuality it took about 8 hours.

I threw a 500 GB in mine when I did it. Easy, and with so much PS Plus and Gameshare, there's plenty of space.

Were you able to recover gameshares? Without having to redownload?

I did it before all the gameshare started (last year).

Everything came back. It literally made a copy of my previous hard drive.
