formations vs plays
formations vs plays
So im setting up my playbook for this season and decided to go a different route. Normally i put a ton of different formations in and that lkmits the amount of plays in each but this time im going the opposite and maximizing the play count from each formation. Jw to see how any of the other custom pb users approached that decision

Re: formations vs plays
I honestly like to keep my formations minimal if possible so I'm not spending all day digging for plays. Re: formations vs plays
Lots of formations, mostly gun, not many plays any each, but I'll have basically one of every type of run and a nice mix of passes to last me for a game if I need to run that formation multiple times.
Re: formations vs plays
Since there are two posts, I figured I would post what I did in the first one:
I hate the play action plays so I always end up taking those out and that also is a way for me to maximize the different formations I can have in my playbook.

Re: formations vs plays
This and what shel said for me. I don't use play action. Maybe it stems from long ago where it was always easy. That's changed but I just got used to not running those plays. As for me like shel lots of formations lots of different plays.ndlquack wrote:Since there are two posts, I figured I would post what I did in the first one:

Re: formations vs plays
actually shel said not many different plays, only lots of formations.. Just enough plays if goes back to a formation again. So I would assume he has anywhere of 9 to 15 plays per formation, but probably only uses an avg of 4 differ pass plays per formation, and 1 to 2 run plays per.. And the other passes in the formation is for change of pace, or something to just show you something different.buckeye76 wrote:This and what shel said for me. I don't use play action. So buckeye, you are currently a class of your own

Re: formations vs plays
I have about 35 offensive formations and I take out almost all the PA and option plays from them. I leave in a few (gotta keep guys honest) and then I remove any pass plays I'm never going to use, as well as any that are in similar formations (I don't need two diff shotgun 4 wide with slants in them, it's the same play honestly, just one wideout is closer to LOS than in the other formation).
Defensively, I have almost every formation there is.

Re: formations vs plays
I have about 25 formations.
Goaline
2 Wishbone
2 Heavy I Form Types
About 10 Pistol
About 10 Shotgun
I probably have as many runs, if not more runs, than passes in them. I really don't need a lot of pass plays, as long as I'm not playing somewhere like the big house, where I can just hot route the pass plays to whatever I need. I have just enough pass plays to get me some route combos that I like, then I modify the rest on the fly. Not sure you'd really be able to tell that I'm doing that unless you paid close attention, because I make the hot route adjustments before my guys even lineup.
Running the spread option is tricky. I had great coaches reports the last few seasons, but that may have been in large part because I've learned to play guys that are cool and much more laid back (big freakin' shout out to the Big East!), so they don't get their panties in a bunch when I run this offense. Some guys can differentiate between the formations, while others just scream "all you do is run the option!" Uhh... yeah. That's kind of the idea. I think I do a pretty good job of giving different looks though. I mix in the FB (or other HB) on triple options, the WR on motion options/jet sweeps and throw in draws, counters and powers as well. I will say that if your goal is a great coaching report, then tons of formations with similar plays isn't going to go as well for you as less formations with different plays (unless those plays look the same to your opponent).
*BTW, now you have the scouting report on me Matt, enjoy!*

haha reign. See i've always been very similar to that. 25+ Formations. This year I've trimmed the book to 20 formations and loaded up on the plays in each set. There are alot of route combos I've never even used once so thats why the switch. seems like most though go with more formations. interesting I thought it'd be the other way around.

Re: formations vs plays
see not to stray off topic but I never understood why people complained about spread option guys running a lot of option. People don't really complain about a team who is running with gt, or one of the academy's for option, or an air raid team throwing the ball a ton and running about 10 times. So why a spread option team get dinged for the option. But that is another topic and another day..ReignOnU wrote:

I love the spread option, sadly you don't have all the possible runs, true blocking, and misdirection you see in a Gus, or even Oregon Offense.
IE. no inside veer, or midlines from gun; very few power if any from the offset formations; and very little true misdirection with auto motion to truly resemble a Gus Malzahn offense.
As for my formation vs play, I think most would say it don't matter anyway for me, because my qbs think they are Payton Manning.

I don't care if someone runs the spread option, lots of teams have run it against me and its a fun aspect of the game. I can't personally run it because I suck at it. I just don't think running the spread option to the outside every play already up 30 is very respectful. As everyone likes to always post, its about moderation.

Re: formations vs plays
I'm thinking you meant speed option? Because if someone is intentionally running a spread option that goes outside every play, then they are getting blown up about 50% of the time, lol.yougoogelizer wrote:6ftdeep wrote:

I mean spread formation option and taking the ball outside the tackle each time. Just trying to say that I like the plays, just not when its every play.

My only question is why did they move the damn pitch button?

Yeah, I have tried running some. Pointless though if you can't hit the right button. Guess I'll have to hit practice mode and just pitch it over and over until I can remember which one it is. I don't think I have successfully pitched a ball yet.yougoogelizer wrote:autiger730 wrote:

I'm pretty good at finding the sideline with my pitches, does that count?

If it hits the ground and happens to bounce forward out of bounds for a gain, I would consider that a win.
