trendon wrote:1. Is it cable, DSL, or fiber optics? Cable

2. Do the disconnections happen when you are directly connected to the modem? Yes, direct connected or wireless, still happens

3. If the answer is no, then you have a router issue. It could be a load issue. Try playing without a single other item using the router. Try playing the PS3 on wireless and wired. Tried both wired/router. Even upgraded to the best internet my provider has, Roadrunner Lightning. I have this all in one box that I guess acts as my modem, router, and even a home phone line hooks up to it. It looks pretty lol.

4. Run a ping test at pingtest.com Picture below

5. Are you neighbors having the same problem and you are on cable? Cable, never speak to any neighbors, though I don't think any of em are gamers lol(plus, all the houses bordering mine are rentals so they're not even used half the time), and I never have any other issues with my connection dropping when just surfing the web or whatever

6. If it is DSL or fiber, does it get worse in wet weather? Cable, doesn't matter the weather, I literally disconnect every single time on NCAA, Tiger, and NBA2K.

7. If the answer to the above are 'no' then you probably have an interior problem. Have your ISP come in redrop the line. NEVER MENTION GAMING!- Redrop the line? What does that mean, and what do I tell them if they ask why?

8. Go to DSLreports.com, find your ISP, and make a forum post. Will do.

Not sure if that is what I think it is, but I believe if you do the DMZ thing, you don't have to do that. If it's what I think it is, that's what I think BigMike said in another thread.

I'll have to look it up.

Shel,
So NAT Type 2 is the best you will get behind a router. This is good.

I would recommend that you try connecting the PS3 directly to the modem and see if you still get disconnect issues.
Even if you have tried this before.

If you try this, I recommend unplugging your modem and turning off your PS3 and give it about 10 minutes.
Then plug your modem back in and wait for all the lights to come on.
Now turn on your PS3, run an internet test on your PS3. Make sure that it can connect fine and record your download and upload speeds, etc.
How does this compare to the speeds you are getting through your PS3 now when connected through your router?

Now try one of those games.

If it works, then we know it is something with your router. Either you need a new one or a setting is messed up in your current router.
If it does not work, then we know it is something with your modem or ISP.

When you go to put the router back in the mix, you will need to do the same thing as before:
I recommend unplugging your modem and turning off your PS3 and give it about 10 minutes.
Then plug your modem back in and wait for all the lights to come on.
Now plug in your router and give it a few minutes.
Now turn on your PS3.

The reason for the 10 minutes is that your modem gets 1 IP address from your ISP that it can assign to 1 device in your home.
So in your current settings, it gave that IP address to your router.
Your router then assigns local IP addresses to your devices.

My last question for now is, does the modem that your ISP gave you have a router built in?
If so, are you using that or are you using a separate router?

We can troubleshoot further from there, once you try this and report back your findings.

Thanks Niddler. Hopefully I can try that tonight, though it may not be til the weekend.

Right now, yes, I have one of those all in one boxes that I guess has the modem/router built in. That is what I am using now.

But before, when my issue first started, I had a standard separate modem and router combo. When I upgraded my internet to the best my provider offers, they switched me to the box with the router built in, and my internet is much faster and everything is great, but my PS3 connection issue didn't change one bit.

Thanks again, I appreciate it.

I have a modem/router as well from time warner but the router in it sucks. I was having all kinds of connection problems and the speed was not anywhere near where they advertised. I had to basically trick it into being just a modem and use a separate router putting the timewarner one into bridge mode. I have the Ubee modem/router but there is a motorola one out there as well. If you google bridging and your router you should find a link explaining it as a lot of people are having issues with the routers.

Was that speedtest what you got from your ps3?

See, my speeds in that test, I assume those are solid, right? Like I said, I have no speed issues and no internet drop issues at all on my computer. It's just the PS3.

The speedtest was from my computer. Haven't done it in a while, but I believe the speed tests on my PS3 were around 10-15 download and maybe 1-3 upload, which I think is good enough for gaming. I'll try it again when I get home today.

Does your provider offer a different modem? I had an issue with dropped games a few years ago after AT&T upgraded me to a combo modem/router. I had to buy a modem without a router to fix the problem.

You had to buy a modem? From AT&T? I have Uverse. I've had it for about a year now. When I first swtiched I didn't have any issues, but around Christmas was when I started having issues with disconnects. I have tried my Uverse modem/router combo and have also gotten my local cable provider's internet and used their modem and my router and was still aving issues.

But it's only the PS3. If I'm on the internet or AIM on my computer, it never drops. if I disconnect on the PS3, at that very moment, my computer is still fine with no drops at all.

I can call and ask them. But I've had the standalone modem and router boxes before I upgraded, and now the combo box since I upgraded. I don't know if they offer the standalone 2 boxes for each with the upgraded internet package. Also not sure if it's worth it since I already had that before.

Well, if AIM is up, even a split second thing would kick me out of AIM, and I'd have to reload AIM, right?

Or if I'm downloading an OOTP update that takes 15 minutes, it would kill that and I'd have to start over, I'd imagine.

AIM usually reloads itself for me, but no idea of your settings

as far as OOTP, i would guess there is no way you should be downloading while on the PS3. I could see that causing a drop

I'm not saying if I'm doing both at the same time.

I just mean, if my connection is prone to drop every 15 minutes or so(not PS3, just in general), then it certainly would have happened at some point when doing an OOTP update, but that's never happened. My updates go off without a hitch.

Yes. I went into the AT&T store and bought a new modem. It was the last that they had without the router at the time and I had to pay extra for it but it resolved my issue. I would start with getting AT&T to replace the modem/router combo. See if that fixes the issue. Or try moving the modem to a different location. You may have a problem with the line it is plugged in to.
