PS3 Red light flashing

Post by dealer4014 »

This is the first version the big monster one

So last night was just playing a game on Tiger and it just shuts off and red light is flashing...i searched things and said this meant it was overheated, so I turned it off completely and went to bed then work, when I got home I thought it would be good to go but still no luck and I couldn't get the game out. Finally got the game out by holding the eject button. Tried turning it on a couple more times but nothing

Anyone know of this can be fixed or is my PS3 dead??

It is most likely flashing yellow for a second and then red, no?

That would be the YLOD and you can fix it (I've fixed my old one twice).

If it isn't that, then I don't know.

If it is, search YLOD on the forums and you'll see the thread about it.

I do recommend getting a new slim model. They're not that expensive anymore, and even if you do fix the old one, I wouldn't count it being able to stand up to everyday use.

I've fixed my original launch 60 GB twice. First time it lasted a year. It has been good for another 4 months this time around and seems fine. But, I pretty much never use it for playing games anymore (unless they're just downloaded games) and just use it for Netflix and a second BD player for my bedroom.

The fans in the old ones were just not that good, and the heat built up running a game with the disc drive going for a few hours is just too much for the board/heat sinks/thermal compound to handle. I will watch a movie once in a while, but that is typically just a 2 hour on-time so it isn't bad.

I also retrofitted the 60Gb with a laptop cooling pad/fan and two USB powered fans mounted to the side. I should really take a picture to show this.

Search gilksy ylod on Google if you want to see the PDF and Videos that I followed to fix mine. Really doesn't cost you much ($5 for thermal compound) if you already have a heat gun.

I just fixed mine via YouTube. I spent about 35-40 to fix on canned air, heat gun, and I bought the article silver 5 compoundnd.

And, for the most part, that is a one time cost. You should have enough arctic silver to fix it again if needed, you now have the heat gun, and the compressed air is cheap/probably isn't gone yet.

My old one kicked the bucket for a third time last night after 45 minutes of watching a movie.

I'm fixing it just to get the movie out and buying a network blu-ray player instead. Got an extra 18 months or so out of the fixes but I'm done with that and never play PS3 games when sitting in bed anyway.
