Connection issues

Post by UCWeiser »

So here's a question for you techies out there.

When the game first came out, I, like a few others, had issues with my connection with the EA servers. I start a game, it would get disconnected at some point. I had found that if I did some port forwarding that I was able to get it to work and made it through Season 22 and 23 without any problems. I played my 23 bowl game without a problem, but by the time we jump in to the season 24, all of a sudden I am having issues again. Shel and Bigmike had issues before and now have no issues since the last patch came out. Does any one think that because I did the port forwarding, and now that those that had issues before it seems that is cleared up, that since I am still doing the port forwarding that it could be causing issues?

I'm wondering if that bowl game was played right before the patch. The timeline seems like it probably was.

Crazy that the patch fixed everything for Mike and I but now seems like your issues only came after the patch.

That's why last night I was asking you if you knew when the patch came out. If the patch came out after, then maybe if I turn the port forwarding off, maybe I won't have the issues anymore. I didn't know a patch came out to fix ther server issues until you said something about it.

Just funny that when the game first came out I had the same issues as you. I do the prot forwarding and get through the first 2 seasons. Now the patch comes out, still doing the port forwarding, and now I have issues. Maybe I don't have to do the port forwarding anymore. I am going to try and turn them off and maybe find someone to scrim Saturday morning to test it out.

I can understand how something in the patch is messing up your PS3 connection, but turning port forwarding off should be of no help.

The way port forwarding works is this:
When a computer on the internet sends data to the external ip address of your router, your router needs to know what to do with the data.
Port Forwarding simply tells the router which computer on the local area network to send the data to.
When you have port forwarding rules set up, your router takes the data off of the external ip address:port number and sends that data to an internal ip address:port number.

To explain it a little better:
It tells your router specifically which machine to send the data to.

Think of the internet as a street. Each house has an address, which is the same as your ISP's modem, it has an IP address provided by your ISP company.

Now, within that house, there are several people living there and each person has a name. which is the same as each computer having an internal/local ip address. The IP address is essentially your computer's name.

When you get mail delivered to your house, how do you know what to do with it, simple, it has a person's name on the label.
Well, when your router gets information, it knows where to send it based on the ip address of your computer.

Where ports come in is: your network card sends and receives data on a port under the ip address of your computer.

Same with your PS3 or any device on the internet. It sends a request to something, somewhere on the internet asking for data.
It has to use a port within your computer or a channel, so to say, to send the request.
Then, once the device that it requested information from gets the request, it puts together a response and sends it back.

Now your modem receives this packet of information and needs to know what to do with it.
The packet will contain information that will tell your modem, hey, someone on your network, with this IP Address (name) asked for this information.

So the modem then sends the information to your router if you have one hooked up, which then sends it to your computer, but it may take it an extra 5 ms to deliver this information by the time it finds your computer's ip address and figures out which port to send the data to.

When you setup port forwarding, you are telling the router, when you get information for this computer, use this ip address and this port.
Which now helps the router deliver the information faster, thus giving your computer a direct link to the super highway.

So turning off port forwarding should not help your situation in any way.
Turning it off would cause your router to take a few ms longer to deliver information to your computer or ps3 or whichever device you are setting up port forwarding for.

I am by no means a network expert though, so for shits and giggles turn it off and try it as who knows what the hell Sony and EA is doing with their stuff sometimes, but by what I understand how network traffic works, it really should not help the situation in any way.

ugh, thanks JDDowner. Maybe I should call my internet/cable provider and ask them that I don't want a modem/router combo and ask for just the modem and use one of the routers I have at home. I don't know if that could be an issue.

Sorry man, but again, give it a shot. You never know with EA and Sony.

More downer info...lol.
As far as the modem/router combo, personally, if the PS3 is the only device you are seeing the issue on, I doubt it is that.

I have a modem/router combo from ATT and it did not give me the ability to turn off DHCP, but it gave me the ability to turn off wireless so it is not broadcasting and then I had to do something funky, I cannot remember what it was called, but I was forwarding some IP address from the modem to the router to allow me to use my own router with the modem/router combo I have from them.

I googled using a router with ATT (insert model number here)
And someone walked me right through it on a forum that I found.

I have AT&T (U-verse) so maybe what you are talking about could help me.

That is the internet that I have also.
so we will have to hook up on aim one day when I am home and I can look at my settings and walk you through what I did and we can go from there.

this may not be an issue but what is our dmz .XXX

I have iphones that share my router and two other CPUS. so what I am saying/asking

I had mine at .5 which conflicted with or was not high enough and possibly conflicted with another device that tried to received .5

I had many disconnects.

I have recently put it at .100 and have had NO issues of disc.

Also I have always been told that DMZ bypasses all ports ?
