Networking Advice

Post by vicktim7 »

i switched isp's this morning to charter cable. i am typing directly connected to the router and pulling 30-40k down and 3-4k up. the problem is with this new setup, my modem and router aren't near my ps3 anymore. i thought i'd try to just connect wireless with the speed being so good, but the signal is dropping quite a lot because it's travelling quite a distance and through a few walls. i decided to try a powerline setup and grabbed a netgear powerline adapter. even when i try that in the same room, the signal is dropping like crazy, so in the other room, it's dropping quite a bit as well. the funny thing is, the upload is not dropping much, but the download is almost nonexistent. any thoughts or ideas on how to better set this up?

Use a second wireless router in the room with your ps3.
Turn off dhcp on the second router and it should help. Other than that figure out a way to run an Ethernet cable to the rooyour ps3 is in.

funny you say that. i picked up a new and improved router with all this mess i've done, so i have my old router i could use in the other room. so set it up and go into the settings to turn off the dhcp? i'm assuming i'll have to hard wire it to my laptop to talk to it rather than my new one because they have the same ip.

fun new year's fooling with this, lol. here's what i have:

motorola surfboard modem with charter isp, 30-40k download, 4 upload.

linksys e2500 wireless n dual band router that was supposed to support double the speed of my old router.

these are currently located in my bedroom which is probably 40-50 feet through a few walls from my playstation. this is where my main cable is coming in. in the bedroom, my router will be connected to my directv box, a blue ray player, and a slingbox.

on hand i have a wireless g gaming adapter, the netgear powerline adapters (which work but drop signal badly; could possible switch for faster ones), and my old linksys wireless n router.

short of drilling holes in my floor to run cat-5 cables, i'm trying to find the best way to link my things. in addition to my ps3, i have my sony tv and directv box i'd love to network as well, but they're not necessities. my biggest issue is trying to figure why my wireless signal is dropping so much to my playstation. sitting beside my playstation, my laptop pulls 9-12k and uploads 3-4k when i do a speedtest.net test. the ps3 gets nowhere near that according to the internet test in the network settings. i've dmz'd my router to 192.168.1.50 and forwarded a couple of ports as well. i've seen several things on the web about dns servers so i need some clarification to what i should actually enter for those. right now, it's hit or miss connecting wirelessly to the ps3 and when it does, it's very slow. it is getting a nat 2 connection.

i would've had the cable guy put a cable outlet where my ps3 is (old outlet is on the other side of the room when house was originally built), but even if i did, i'd have the same issue trying to get signal back to my bedroom.

So on your old router, yes, you will have to plug a laptop or computer into it with an Ethernet cable.
Then go to the default ip address, whatever that is. I assume it is 192.168.1.1 based on the ip address you posted previously.
Then you will have to change it's ip address since you said it is the same as your current router.
Then turn off dhcp.

The big issue vicktim, and I apologize, is to hook up a second router, you have to have an Ethernet cable from your first router to your second one.
Sorry, that is what I get for trying to help you with many crown and cokes in me. :D

But to have a second router, you would have to change the ip address to something like 192.168.2.1 and then turn off dhcp so that only 1 router is assigning ip addresses.
But again, the second router would have to have an Ethernet cable feeding it.

I'd run a wire to a room closer to your ps3, maybe half way, and hook up the second wireless router there.

+1

If you cannot run it to the room with your PS3, get it as close as possible.
Good thinking Oracle.

good suggestions. i'm afraid an issue would the path to that room from my bedroom causes problems as far as running wires.

i was able to put the wireless gaming adapter a bit closer to my bedroom and then ran the cat5 along the bottom to the ps3. it pulled a much better signal. according to the ps3, it was getting 7-8k on the download and 2-3k on the upload. it's still frustrating that i'm paying for 30k but can't get near that on the ps3. i may just have to resort to moving the modem and having wires go everywhere when i decide to play a game. it would let me direct connect or run it directly from my router at the least. ncaa has been the only thing i play online, so it would just be for those games.

I found holes! Thus means I can do some cable wiring under my house. Does it matter which cable type I use? Cat5, cat5e, etc.?

Even if you run cables directly to your ps3 it will still not go much above what you are hitting now if it can go higher. 7-8 down and 2-3 up is much more than enough for your ps3.

It drops that much with the distance? 50-75ft direct from main router directly to ps3.

Could be wrong but I think the hardware in the ps3 will not support that high of speeds.

Less chance of drops with wiring it, I'm assuming. I'll check prices for that much cable and see what it will be. Thanks for all the help!

Make sure you run wires that are suited for installation inside a wall.

Really not needed.
I ran an Ethernet cord from my basement to a bedroom upstairs and ran it outside, up the house and into the bedroom.
I live in Northeast Ohio where we get hit with snow and some cold weather and I have never had an issue and this is the third winter coming up.

Just get standard Ethernet cat5 and run it. You should have no issues.

got my cat53 ethernet cable today and went to work under the house. after a shawshank redemption crawl around, i finally got it ran. showered and readied to test it and.............NOTHING! NO SIGNAL!!!

i'm supposing either the cable is bad, i fouled it up stringing it through my floor and around my house, or something on my system doesn't like cat5e cable. can't figure it would be the last one, so needless to say, i'm pissed. and sore.

My ideal goal eventually is to network my whole house. The next house I purchase (which may not ever happen) will be wired in each room.

If I network my whole house is the wireless router needed anymore?

You will need some kind of router either wireless or wired. I would go with the wireless because it would give you more options.

Wireless ones are just as cheap as wired ones now-a-days and you can always turn off the wireless part of the router.
