It can't be any tougher than Pullman, Corvallis, Waco, Ames, or Manhattan.

been to Manhattan, believe there is a small airport in Topeka then an hour ride from there, not sure on the others. Just basing the others on what I heard reports about.

Interesting story about ACC expansion...

The second target was Connecticut, which was part of the Northeast footprint the ACC wanted, and was coming off the daily double of a BCS bid in football and a championship in men’s basketball (the third for Jim Calhoun).

In addition, the women’s basketball program under Geno Auriemma had established itself as the most dominant in the sport over the past 15 years.
With growing instability in the Big East, both schools were bound to accept any offers.

While Syracuse presented no problem, UConn did - to BC, which was still fuming over what it perceived to be vitriolic comments made when BC was finally invited to join the ACC and started competing in 2005. UConn and Pittsburgh filed a lawsuit against BC, and Calhoun made comments about never playing BC again.
DeFilippo does not deny that BC opposed the inclusion of UConn.

“We didn’t want them in,’’ he said. “It was a matter of turf. We wanted to be the New England team.’’

Turning to Pittsburgh BC officials argued that Pittsburgh, with a stronger tradition in football, as well as a long-established - though dormant - rivalry with the Eagles, would be a better fit.

The Boston Globe reported Sunday that the Big East is discussing adding Air Force, Boise State and Navy in football-only moves, and then Central Florida and Temple in all sports to offset the departures of Pitt and Syracuse to the ACC and the potential loss of TCU to the Big 12.

The big east is done. They are meeting tomorrow to discuss raising fees on all of the schools who are exiting. Most of what I have heard has Louisville being a strong candidate to the Big 12 and receiving the next invite. I would not be surprised if by the end of the week UL, WVU, and Cincy are gone to the big 12 leaving the big east basically dead.

Can someone please explain why TCU still has to pay the $5 million exit fee to the Big East? That's like having to pay the cover fee at a bar you think you want to go to but never actually step into.

no its like going to a $500 a plate dinner and waiting til the last day to cancel your spot.

the charity isn't going to be able to get a replacement on such quick notice, so you pay your fee still and just don't show up.

if the big east ends up with Boise St, Air Force and Navy... i may quit watching sports unless UConn moves to a new conference. okay... i won't stop, but wow that'll suck.

5 mil Is not even that much I figured it would be more and their contract would be a little harder to get out of but 5 million is the agreed upon damage they have to pay for breaching their contract.

The big east was the weakest before, but with the addition of the military schools and temple and ucf and potentially villnova from FBS... yikes. What does this mean for the BCS automatic bids? A 14 team SEC should probably get two bids but should the big east still get one? Is something that can be taken away?

Final questions: Did anyone predict this in a book or anything like that, that anyone knows of? I know there were some books bashing the BCS and all that but did anyone say that major conference realignment was right around the corner?

I don't think Air Force will be moving anywhere. I saw this quote from their AD about them being invited to the Big XII. I have a lot of respect for this guy now. He's clearly one of the few that doesn't have dollar signs in their eyes when it comes to realignment. Either that or he's just leveraging somebody.
We were approached by the Big 12, and I told them we're not a good fit for that conference. In the Big 12, geography makes sense, the economics make sense, but recruiting makes no sense for us. I can't recruit against Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State," [Air Force athletic director Hans] Mueh said.

"That's why I turned down the Big 12. I can't do that to my kids, because they'll get beat up. I'd love the extra $12 million or whatever it would be per year from the TV money. And I know how I'd spend the money. I'd build a new soccer stadium, and I'd build a new baseball facility, all in one year. But I can't do that."
And to ease your mind a bit Dave, I've read that Boise is a real longshot for the Big East. They're more or less just throwing ideas out there because that's all they can do. They're about done.

Can the Big East survive without adding anyone? I cant imagine they can remain competitive if they keep a TV deal that pays them $3-5M per year when everyone else is getting $20-25M. Those schools are always going to have a foot out the door hoping to jump into another conference.

The same article also said their other sports would go to the MVC, but the MVC said yesterday they have no plans to expand. SO .... who knows, half the schools have no idea what they are doing. Did you see Memphis' AD say they are a perfect fit for the SEC?
