Sony’s PlayStation Network woes continue, with the company’s own password reset system – a mandatory step in getting back online after Sony restored PSN services at the weekend – turning out to be a loophole for account theft. Resetting a password required just a PSN account email and the user’s date of birth, Nyleveia spotted: two elements that were among the data stolen in the original hack back in April.

Sony has taken down the PlayStation Network sing-in page, and all PlayStation game titles are unavailable. “Unfortunately this also means that those who are still trying to change their password via Playstation.com or Qriocity.com will be unable to do so for the time being,” the company admitted. “This is due to essential maintenance and at present it is unclear how long this will take.”

“In the meantime you will still be able to sign into PSN via your PlayStation 3 and PSP devices to connect to game services and view Trophy/Friends information … this maintenance doesn’t affect PSN on consoles, only the website you click through to from the password change email.” Sony

The company is presumably working on an amended way to verify users are who they say they are, which we’re expecting to show up sooner rather than later. Still, the somewhat naive decision in the first place is unlikely to help Sony win back the confidence of its gamers.

PlayStation Network is scheduled to undergo maintenance today, from about 8am until approximately 5pm Pacific time. During this time, registration and Account Management will be inaccessible, including the password reset process. While some users may experience difficulty signing in to PSN, the majority of consumers will be able to play online as well as sign in to external sites that require PSN authentication (like this one).

For those asking about the PlayStation Store, we’re still targeting restoration of all services by the end of this month. Contrary to reports, the Store will not be publishing today.

Stay tuned to the PlayStation Twitter feed for updates and a notice when maintenance has concluded.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

PlayStation Network Down Today
Maintenance 'a crucial step' towards the store's return.
June 1, 2011

Level 19
by Greg Miller
The PlayStation Network will be down for "several hours" today as Sony works to get the service up to speed and ready for the relaunch of the PlayStation Store, which the company says will happen this week.

"The server maintenance performed at this time represents a crucial step in the full restoration for PSN, including the PlayStation Store," posted VP of Sony Network Entertainment Eric Lempell on the PlayStation Blog. "During this maintenance period, users will be unable to sign in to PSN, though those that are already logged in should be able to remain online."

Lempel closed out the short post by saying that "resumption of full PlayStation Network service is still on track for this week in most regions."

Sony begins full restoration of its PSN and Qriocity services (update: intermittent issues)
By Thomas Ricker posted Jun 2nd 2011 12:56AM
Can it be happening? Is Sony's security nightmare finally over? Seems to be. On Tuesday, Sony promised full restoration of its PlayStation Network and Qriocity services in the Americas, Europe, and Asia (excluding Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea) by the end of the week. Now Sony is proclaiming that today is the day for full restoration with details of its "welcome back" package to be announced from each region. The PlayStation Store is already up with a "huge lineup" of new games, demos, add-ons, themes, avatars, and videos along with an updated Playstation Plus. Hey, look on the bright side Sony, even though you've lost the confidence of millions of your customers, at least now they're aware of your Qriocity service. Full press release after the break.

Update: Working fine for us from London. We signed in to the PlayStation Store and even fired up Black Ops multiplayer just for kicks.

Update 2: We're now seeing error "80710D36" occasionally when trying to access the PlayStation Store, presumably due to congestion. We're seeing this from both London and New York.
