i'm far from a football x & o specialist like packsy and hart i never understood the idea of bringing everyone close together on a short yardage play.
the goal of a blocker, in the most basic sense, is to take out your man. if you can bring your guy 20 yards away from the play wouldn't that do the job ?
I forget what game was this happened in because it could have been any number of games but someone yelled out, "This is why the Patriots rule. To gain one inch, they'll be Patriot players all over the field." And it is true. The same formation the Pats use for 3rd-and-6, 2nd-and-9 is often the same as 4th-and-inches.
Either way, you are pretty much spot on. However, the big packages still have a place ... just not every fucking time. And vice-versa. You couldn't come out in a pro set every time you need one yard because you don't need to be a defensive coordinator to know what to call; man free or all man, four up front, and a seven man pressure package. Good luck running into that with only five or six hats on your line and you won't be passing even if you use the most elementary of routes because of BnR coverage. Dropping defensive ends into the LB position will trick a stupid QB into thinking the receiver has the inside.
On the other hand, big packages are fucking fantastic for play action.
All in all, it is my belief - supported by my lovers at Advanced NFL Stats and Football Outsiders - that football coaches at all levels piss down their pants with most any play call not starting on 1st-and-10.
