Yep. I think we all knew it was coming, after the Pete Thamel article (which was full of factual inaccuracies, but I digress), public perception of the NCAA would've been bad had they ruled him eligible.

He'll be a top-5 pick probably in the draft. As for UK, odds are we'll run a 4 guard lineup now with Terrance Jones in the middle, ala Villanova. Big loss for our frontcourt.

.....and you get an F for that one. As in "fail". There was never a compliance issue here. In fact, UK did more than they needed to in order to make SURE they stayed compliant. UK did nothing wrong (Washington was after him too); if he was eligible, then we got a top-5 NBA pick. If he wasn't, we lose nothing.

The fucked up thing is that they say he got $33,000 more than what his expenses were. That's fine, I can understand that.....but TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS WERE FOR EDUCATION EXPENSES!!! That money went straight to Vargas, who has paid it to UK (since he's not eligible he has to pay his way, and has done so from day one). Had the Turkish club given the money directly to UK, the NCAA would've had no problem with it; but because they gave it TO him to GIVE TO UK, it's illegal?

Lemme get this straight....he gets money for EDUCATION EXPENSES and the NCAA says this is a no-no, but the same money coming to the school from the team is ok? Yet, this was an "attempt to professionalize" by the player. Ok....that makes total sense

Great thing is, with the new rules in place, he gets to appeal and has a great chance; he's more than willing to pay back every extra penny (including the education money) and has the funds ready (his family is well off); and has done everything he can to become a collegiate athlete; and the board he will appeal to doesn't rule on the letter of the law, but instead the INTENT of the law, and this gives him a solid chance.

From what I understand, the $13,000 extra is split up over a ton of extra things, mostly food and stuff like that. However, he has been willing to pay back anything deemed "extra" from day one. Meanwhile, you look at Cam Newton, who apparently was shopping himself around, and he's allowed to play. I understand if the kid was TRYING to get extra money, but the rules when it comes to USA amateurs (AAU, etc) are not as easily applicable to kids from Europe. Whatever the outcome of this situation, I truly hope that the NCAA develops something to prevent this from happening to more kids from Europe.

Then again, thats a pipe dream....like the NCAA would actually do something to HELP these kids.

there have been thousands of athletes that have come from europe that have played in adult leagues there that refused to be paid to keep their amateurism.

stop trying to make this into something its not.

I've seen very few European players come to NCAA D-1 schools from major European leagues. And again, he was being paid for his EXPENSES. However, the NCAA deemed that some of them were unnecessary expenses.

You're acting like he was a "professional" because he got an extra $13,000 (not counting the money for college, which again wasn't a payment when you consider that they could've paid the money to UK on his behalf and it would've been "ok" to the NCAA)....you realize that most of the guys in that league make more than that in a month? He was traveling with one of the most prestigious teams in Europe, I'm sure he got caught up in the lifestyle and paid more than he needed to for some things and thus, "unnecessary expenses". If this kid was truly trying to be a pro, he wouldn't have said from day one that he'd gladly give back whatever he received extra (which shows hwo badly he wants to be a COLLEGE KID), and he sure as hell wouldn't have taken chump change to be one of the best players on his team.

(And for those who want to discuss this, please don't simply go by an article that was written by someone who used an interpreter and "quoted" someone without even mentioning that he used an interpreter, thus meaning he could basically distort almost everything--and it's been proven that he DID).

yes, between soccer, basketball, tennis, and other sports i'm sure there have been thousands of athletes that have come over from Europe.

europe doesnt have as many organized leagues as the US does so many of the post high school leagues are mixed with pros and amateurs

bottom line is the kid got paid... what part about that is grey? its clearly black and white. you get paid to play on a pro team, you can't play. he got paid. he can't play.

The NCAA is a bunch of fools, although they didn't fuck up the tournament with the move to 68, but i'm sure they will eventually.

I agree with J in saying that although he was paid to play as found in the investigation, plenty of players receive inadmissible benefits and have to pay them back before they can be re-instated. His situation is very similar, so I wouldn't be surprised if he won the appeal especially since the flip-flop on Masoli's decision.

You really think the NCAA "investigates" the kids who play soccer? Or Tennis? Those sports don't get scrutinized, and they don't make money. They don't care.

And it's not nearly the same--the kids who play soccer in Europe don't get PAID; they're playing for Youth Academies. It's like going to a prep school here like Oak Hill. Freddie Adu was being recruited at age 12 to play for the Youth Academies of AC Milan and Inter Milan in Italy; Real Madrid in Spain; and Manchester United and Arsenal in England. He would've had everything paid for--travel around Europe, food, room/board....sounds a lot like the Kanter experience to me. Yet, the NCAA sees no problem if any of those kids choose to come to the USA and play in college (although they'd be stupid to, the youth teams in Europe dominate what we have here).

I will agree that the rules towards the Europeans are not the same as those for the US athletes. There is a gap there.
