Receiver Problems -- NEED ADVICE
Ok so here's the deal. A few months back my Harman Kardon receiver (AVR 247) stopped outputting to the subwoofer. Everything else worked fine there was just no bass. It was only 2.5 years old but out of warranty and I didn't buy the extended warranty from Best Buy. HK tech support told me that my receiver needed a software upgrade. Long story short, I ended up paying some mom and pop shop here in Austin $70 to do the upgrade for me (they were the ONLY place in Austin that services HK out of warranty). Got my receiver back, I have bass again, all is good.
Fast forward a few months to now, I get home, turn on my shit, and my receiver makes a vibrating noise and powers back off after being on for a few seconds. Normally, when the receiver is "off," the power button is an amber color. When it's on, it's blue and the front lcd screen shows all the statuses and stuff. So now it's off and the power button is still amber, but when i try to turn it on, the power button will turn blue for like 10 seconds but power back off on it's own. The front lcd won't display anything now.
So here's my question(s). Any tech guys out there have any idea what might be going on now? I'll be damned if I take it back to that one place to have it fixed again (another story, another day). Should I just break down and get a new one? I'm definitely not buying another HK that's for sure, but shit, I spent $500 on this one and it barely lasted me 3 years. I've heard Onkyo is good, what else do I need to be looking for in a new receiver if I do decide to get one? All I know is that I need at least 5.1 surround and at least 3 HDMI ports (cable box, PS3, xBox). Any type of upconvert technology for the TV would be nice since I do have a 1080p tv.
Thanks for any help guys.

I would say that you should just buy a new one. I know it is hard to take the loss of only having the other one for 3 years and paying $500. I know a lot of people that have the Onkyo receiver and absolutely love it.
As for your HK one, I am think along computer terms when something like that happens. Most of the time when a power issue happens like that it is the power supply but usually that in turn fries part of the circuit board. I am no expert on this but I do see this happen in computers all the time at work.

I agree with Priest. Buy a new one. You already have $70 invested and can easily sink a couple hundred more into fixing this new problem.
And I have a Yamaha receiver that I have had for 10 years or more that does Dolby Digital and DTS and love it.
I got it back when I worked at Best Buy and my 10 year anniversary is coming up at Progressive. So it is at least 10 years old.
Onkyo is a good brand too though.

This is an open box returm but they are tested. i would also buy the extended warranty for 50 bucks and then you are set.

Onkyo TX-SR608. Looks nice and does everything I need to do.
