Kentucky Is a FUCKING JOKE!!! (8/6 Coach Cal is fucked)

Post by VeniVediV1ci »

Chicago Sun Times reporting Anthony Davis' father was asking for 6-figures for his son to commit.

Of course he's going to UK, but the good ole Times said he was getting $200k for the committment and the Sun Times ran it then took it off then ran it again.

...just heard it from SVP

Apparently there have been 3 other schools that have confirmed the story to O'Brien. After the second story aired, and after an attorney from Kentucky send a letter requesting the story be taken down Kentucky responded with this press release:

The University of Kentucky is dismayed by the continued lack of professionalism and responsible journalism exhibited by Michael O’Brien and the Chicago Sun-Times in running yet another false and defamatory story on August 6, 2010, regarding the University’s recruitment of a high school student-athlete. Both the father of this student-athlete and the University have repeatedly told Mr. O’Brien that these unsubstantiated “rumors” are untrue. Neither the University of Kentucky nor any member of its Athletic Department has offered or paid any money or other illegal benefits to the student-athlete or his family.

Mr. O’Brien’s August 6 story also mischaracterizes the NCAA’s involvement in this matter by stating that “the NCAA is ‘checking’ into the recruitment of” the student-athlete. The University of Kentucky spoke with David Price, NCAA Vice President of Enforcement, who advised that the NCAA contacted Mr. O’Brien simply to inquire as to the alleged sources for his article and that “this in no way confirms an NCAA investigation of the University” or an examination of the recruitment of the named student-athlete. It is the University’s understanding that such an inquiry represents the NCAA’s normal procedure any time allegations of misconduct are made, no matter how outrageous or unsubstantiated they may be.

The University of Kentucky has put Mr. O’Brien and the Chicago Sun-Times on notice that these published statements are false and defamatory. The University fully supports any action the student-athlete and his family may take against Mr. O’Brien and the Chicago Sun-Times. The University is also evaluating all available rights and remedies it may have against Mr. O’Brien and the Chicago Sun-Times in responding to these false and defamatory statements.

Why is this odd? Well, Davis hasnt publically comitted to any school, although his dad claims he knows where he is going and will comit today. Also, Kentucky was never accused of being one of the schools to give the father some cash in the original story. Just seems odd that Kentucky would be the only one to take issue with the story.

You're like two days late, and UK has already retained a lawyer and has issued notice of a possible slander/libel lawsuit. That is RARE for something like this, so it should tell you something. These "journalists" are really starting to push the envelope, disregarding simple journalistic ethics and constantly quoting "sources" that have no names and no faces, and thus they have nothing to ever worry about in regards of being discredited.

Oh, Brwnbr, UK WAS named in the first article, which the Chicago Sun-Times then edited after UK sent them a letter. This was posted on Kentuckysportsradio.com, a very popular site, by Matt Jones--a lawyer who runs the site, and who was the guy spearheading the Pitino trial coverage (and got out the "15 second" factoid), and this is a screenshot he posted of the ORIGINAL article:

Image

UK within HOURS had their lawyers issue this letter to the Chicago Sun Times:

Image

WITHIN TWO HOURS of receiving said letter, Chicago Sun-Times removed all mentions of Kentucky. Now you tell me--if the source was really that credible that the paper could break a story of this magnitude and PROVE the claims they were making....would they have taken out the mention of Kentucky? Wouldn't they have instead kept it in and made a name for the reporter and the paper by breaking the "smoking gun" so many people want?

Hate UK if you want; but common sense says they would've stood up for what they wrote if they had any real proof, if this "source" was really worth a damn. And also keep in mind, UK hasn't responded to any of the "accusations" they've dealt with the past year, but it wasn't UK's coaching staff that issued this, it was the Athletic Director, with whom Coach Cal doesn't have the coziest relationship. And the AD usually doesn't reply to the claims made against the program....this one, he's on a war-path, his actions the past 48 hours show it.

This says it all, written yesterday....again by a lawyer:
In case you went to bed early and missed it, there was a controversy yesterday between the Chicago Sun-Times and UK involving an article about recruit Anthony Davis Jr. Yesterday the Sun-Times put out an article about Davis Jr that included a reference to a “rumor” that he was given $200,000 by the University of Kentucky to go to the school. The response was quick on Twitter and was universal condemnation. All the major sportswriters said publishing the rumor was out of line and many lambasted the writer and editor for making the decision. So then, the Sun-Times changed the article to remove the mention of the money and UK, but left in the fact that “rumors” said that Davis was looking to get paid by colleges. The University of Kentucky then responded with a letter threatening a lawsuit (which can be seen a couple of posts down) if the contents were not removed.

So what happened. The Chicago Sun-Times has now completely rewritten the article.. They have taken out all references to money, UK, dollar amounts or any “rumors” of Davis Jr. being on the take. The threat by UK seems to have worked and the new article is simply a profile of Davis Jr, with no talk of any rumors or responses to being paid by anyone. The Chicago Sun-Times thus has completely backed down.

But notice, as of this writing, there is no mention that the story was edited or of the previous article. Another tool that newspapers use on the internet…write a story…change it…dont tell anyone what it said before. In print, that is a retraction. On the internet, it is a “lets act like we didnt do anything wrong.” Another trick stolen from the blog world by the newspaper world.

Yea, this was before a second story went up today confirming what was written earlier and this time with 3 sources from 3 different Universities. The most likely explanation is the editor received the letter from UK, edited the mention to comply while he checked OBriens sources. Once he was able to confirm the sources, he was able to run with the second story today. I doubt UK is going to go through with any lawsuit. The ST has millions in insurance against libel suits and I doubt UK would want to be on the stand.

And I stand corrected on the UK mention.

I don't think UK's going to sue either now that their name was taken out; that said, I also think they're taking a stand against this crap. It's getting REALLLLLLY old. Kansas' top recruit Josh Selby is being investigated for REAL by the NCAA, nobody's talking about that. A RUMOR about an investigation into UK (which never takes off or has any merit 80% of the time) launches major networks/blogs/internet chatters going into "UK's gonna get caught THIS time!" hysteria, and it's just getting OLD.

Thing is, the new story simply says his dad ASKED for money; it no longer mentions any proof that anybody PAID him any money, and UK hasn't gotten a commitment from him yet. If they had any proof that UK had agreed to anything or paid him anything, they'd have kept it in there; and he'd be a UK commit now, don't you think?

Personally I don't want them going after him. Our 2011 class is already fully loaded and we don't need the headaches and baggage this kid is going to bring.

two days late from the original story, but not when they republished the paragraph in the article and are seriously sticking by it.

3 universities willing to attach their name to it is a huge thing, so good luck in Lexington "la-la" land pretending there's no truth behind it

The fact that the Suntimes backed up the story again today has me interested. No doubt UK would be one of the few universities to pay that sum for a 17 year old kid. His whole recruitment has had twists and turns and been very awkward. Not too long ago he was scheduled to visit Louisville on a Sunday, but his father cancelled that the Saturday before and they trimmed his list to all Nike schools. I hate college basketball recruiting. I doubt there is anything here though that will penalize a school unless somehow it can be proven that UK or a school was going to agree to pay him $200,000. All I know is that we most likely won't see this kid commit anytime soon because of this story, assuming it has legs or continues.

Since you can't read for SHIT apparently, let me break this down for you:
The University of Kentucky on Thursday denied a Chicago Sun-Times report that a $200,000 deal was made to get a top Chicago high school basketball player to attend the school, according to a law firm representing the university.

Sources told the Sun-Times the father of 6-10 Anthony Davis, a highly recruited senior basketball player, negotiated a deal that promised $200,000 from someone who wanted Davis to commit to Kentucky.

Ok....so far: UK denied paying him per their lawyers; "sources" (not SCHOOLS) told the S-T that SOMEONE WHO WANTED DAVIS TO COMMIT TO UK negotiated a deal. There's no mention of UK paying him or any schools supporting that claim.
Another source told the Sun-Times that the NCAA is ''checking'' into the recruitment of Davis.

''The University of Kentucky has spoken with Mr. David Price, NCAA vice president of enforcement,'' according to the letter to the Sun-Times, which was written by Kevin G. Henry of the Lexington, Ky., law firm Sturgill, Turner, Barker and Moloney, PLLC. ''He advised that whatever inquiry you received from an NCAA person was merely asking you for information about your sources for your article, and that this is not confirmation of an 'investigation' of the University of Kentucky or an examination of the recruitment of the named student-athlete by the NCAA.''

This part says that a "source" says the NCAA is looking into his recruitment, and when contacted by UK's lawyers, the NCAA said they were simply asking about the SOURCE that the Sun-Times was citing. There's no investigation of either UK or the player. Again, no implications here.
When the original story detailing the discussions and the $200,000 agreement was posted online Wednesday, the university posted a letter on its own website from its law firm asking the Sun-Times to withdraw publication of the story.

''Please be advised that the article is false and defamatory and could lead to legal action,'' stated the letter, which was signed by attorney Stephen L. Barker.

Sources from three separate universities told the Sun-Times that Davis Sr. asked for money in return for his son's commitment, with the amounts ranging from $125,000 to $150,000.

When reached Thursday, Davis Sr. declined to respond further, saying: ''Thanks for ruining my son. Thank you very much.''

Ok....so three schools said that the kid's dad asked them for money. This was after he cut his list down to three schools. No mention of UK; not one indication that any of these schools were willing to be a party to claiming UK cheated. Nothing here that supports any claim that UK has paid him or has thought of paying him.

The rest of the article:
Georgette L. Greenlee, an attorney representing Davis Sr. and his wife, Erainer Eberhardt-Davis, also denied the original Sun-Times story.

''Mr. Davis has not asked any university or college for any commitment fee for his son, nor has anything been offered to him or Mrs. Davis,'' Greenlee wrote Thursday.

Davis plays for Perspectives MSA -- a co-op team with players from Perspectives Joslin and Perspectives MSA -- in the Public League Blue-West, a conference that receives almost no attention from media or college scouts. Perspectives Joslin, the school Davis attends, is located at 1930 S. Archer.

Rumors that Davis' commitment is for sale through his father have surfaced since he cut his list of schools to Kentucky, Ohio State and Syracuse. Last week he added DePaul to that group, visiting the Lincoln Park campus Monday. On Tuesday, Davis Sr. told media outlets that a decision had been made, but no timetable was given for an announcement. Sources have told the Sun-Times that Kentucky was Davis' choice.

Davis was 6 feet tall at the end of his sophomore season but grew to 6-10 before his senior season. Perspectives MSA was 8-15 last season, despite strong play from Davis.

In April, Davis joined the club team Meanstreets, founded and coached by former Thornton star and NFL wide receiver Tai Streets. After playing nationally with Meanstreets this spring and summer, Davis became one of the hottest recruits in the nation.

Davis and his father visited Kentucky on Sunday.

''We spoke with the president of the school, looked at the living quarters where Anthony would be staying and saw some film on some improvements they are making within the basketball program,'' Davis Sr. told ChicagoHoops.com.

''We also met the entire coaching staff, from coach Cal [John Calipari] to the weight trainer.''

Calipari has had trouble with the NCAA before.

• On Aug. 20, 2009, the NCAA ruled that Simeon grad Derrick Rose was ineligible to play for Calipari's Memphis team in 2007-08. Memphis was forced to vacate the entire 2007-08 season, including its runner-up finish in the NCAA tournament.

• Calipari took Massachusetts to the Final Four in 1996, but that appearance also was vacated after an NCAA investigation determined that Minutemen star Marcus Camby took $28,000 from two sports agents.

• In May, the New York Times reported that the NCAA was investigating the ''academic makeover and extra benefits'' former Kentucky guard Eric Bledsoe received while in high school in Alabama. According to the Times, the NCAA sent investigators to at least three places in Alabama to ask about Bledsoe.

All we have here--info on who he is, what visits he has made, and a recap of a player who took money from an agent, a player who the NCAA Clearinghouse told Memphis they could use, and a story that has never gone anywhere and has had nothing to do with Coach Cal, just some things that went on in high school regarding a player who he coached, a player he wasn't recruiting at that time.

So please, VVV....either show me some fucking proof to back up your claim, or just admit you're a hater. The shit's getting REALLY old now.

I didn't compare. That said, how about you stop changing the subject (you're deaf dumb etc) and admit the fact that in your haste to post this, you either

1) didn't read

2) didn't understand what you read

3) can't perform simple reading comprehension

Could be one of those three, could be all three. Fact is you need to AGAIN either show some proof to back up how this proves anything, or admit you're a hater. The fact that you continue to post negative "articles" about UK, and yet you ignore the REAL investigation going on into Kansas' top recruit (you know, that school that is your RIVAL in college hoops), shows that you simply just hate UK and WISH one of these stories were true. Coach Cal has never paid a player, and he doesn't NEED to--with or without this kid, our 2011 class may go down as one of the greatest EVER.

Unsure why posting about a major news organization sticking with their story alleging paying a basketball recruit by a dirty coach questions my reading comprehension. And as I said earlier, please go ahead and compare value of the degrees from our two schools.

Kansas isn't Texas' rival in college hoops, Texas sucks and will never be good enough to win with Rick Barnes. Texas A&M is the rival in basketball, while Kansas State will be the best team in the Big XII next year so I think KU should worry about them instead.

Congrats on 2011 being the greatest class ever as I'd be surprised if it's better than 2010 considering they didn't come close to getting the #1 recruit in the nation (well i guess they didn't get #1 in either of the last two years), but we all know that a few years down the line even if they win the championship they will have to vacate it.
