Re: steelcity/twins/Update
The Dr's have slowly started feeding Alec 1cc of food,(which is barely anything), every 3 hours which so far he is handling it really well. Then slowly they will increase his feedings, as long as there are no setbacks, until they make the determination that he is ready to have another surgery to re-connect the small intestines to the large intestines and the rectum. From the Dr's/surgeons all the way down to the nurses everyone has been really impressed with his recovery up to this point. He has come a long way and showed a lot of spirit and fight he is climbing the ladder one step at a time.
We were able to bring his brother, Jake home on Sunday which feels really good to have him home. It was a bittersweet moment when we got Jake ready to come home and we had to tell our son Alec good-bye.

Re: steelcity/twins/Update
Yesterday Our son Alec had his second surgery with the intestines, overall the surgery went really well according to the surgeon, Ideally the Dr’s would have liked him to keep 45cm of his small intestine but he ended up with 43cm, too early to tell what type of impact that will have. They placed a G-tube in his stomach that leads out of the skin to help with supplementing of food until he is able to eat everything through the mouth. He had his appendix removed more as a precaution, there was nothing wrong with it but if he ever needed a procedure involving the appendix because of his recent procedures it would be more complicated than normal. So over the next few days they are going to watch to make sure there is no infection from the surgery and there are no leaks involving the intestines, in 7-10 days he will have another procedure where they will place iv’s through his jugular vein instead of leaving them directly through his veins, which is called The “Broviac Procedure”. Yesterday everyone medically felt confident with the operation, over the next few days/weeks/months/ years will determine how successful it actually was. We know he still has a long way to go but the wife and I are very happy with where he is at for the moment, and hope that it only gets better over the next day’s/weeks/months/years.

Re: steelcity/twins/Update
Just an update
Our son Alec is doing well after his last procedure on April 21 and he did have the Broviac procedure, May 4th. So far so good, after meeting with Dr's about his condition they shed some more light on his situation, they told us that full-term babies are born with anywhere between 150-200cm of small instestine, he has 43cm. The Dr's told us that he can not afford to have anything go wrong with the remaining amount. His liver started to get inflamed because If the body is on continuous Iv's around the clock for weeks at a time(which our son had been on), the body does not like that and side affects will start to occur. This was the reason for the broviac procedure, instead of having the IV's running through his hand, head, feet veins they are running them through his juglar vein. How it works is they put like a port from the outside of the skin, then it is threaded into his juglar vein. They did not go through his neck for this procedure, they ran through the left side of his chest. The hope was/is to run a higher volume through the juglar that will allow him not to be on iv's for 24hrs a day. So far it is working they are able to take him off of his iv's for 8 hrs a day.
Currently he is located in Colorado Springs, which is 40minutes north of us and usually one of us is there daily if not both. Because of the above concerns he is getting transported to Denver which is anywhere 90min-2 hr drive time each way. our visits will go from daily to weekends or any other days off. There is a chance that he could come home in 2-3 weeks, but they told us to prepare at the minimum, he will be there for 4-6months.

Re: steelcity/twins/Finally everyone is home with pictures
It has been a long road with a lots of ups and downs, and at times didnt know for sure if I was ever going to post this. But, 6 months after our twins were born were are able to say everyone is HOME!!!!!It was official on Monday, but it has been so hectic. Our son Alec is not totally out of the woods yet, but the drs felt that he was at a point that what the staff was doing for him at the hospital we could do for him at home. All week we have been learning how to take care of his food, and his IV's(sorry I have been out of reach to get NDL games in but I will be signed in to AIM so hit me up, just be patient if possible) the ivs are intimidating but we are learning. The pictures do not indicate there is anything wrong, but this process has taught us you can not judge a book by it's cover...Anyway I can not even express how it feels to see my family everyday without going to a hospital to have them all together.....
Here are some pictures
My wife Larissa holding our son Jake, Myself with our oldest son Carter on my right knee and Alec in my other arm

Our son Alec getting ready to come home for the first time

Our Boys getting to know each other(Carter, Jake, and Alec)

thanks shell and hoos with posting the pictures
