Review of Socom
Review of Socom
Ok i have played socom for about a good solid week, and here is my review.
I give it a 8.5, and this good go up if they make more maps for it, which I would say is a huge priority if the game wants longivity especially with rfom2 and cod coming out in less than a month.
Is it as good as socom2, i would say it is equal, the reason being is it has all the same characteristics of socom2, the graphics are just better in ps3.
The reason why socom2 to some was better,
We didnt play cod and rfom, the only shooter game out there to play was socom2 and it was something different to many of us because football was all that we had play online. This was the first game that we could play as a large group and get to know one another on a more personal level.
This game has potential because of the all the possibilities, but the fun level will only exist if a large group of guys play and that goes with any shooter game.

it is a fun game to play but they need to fix some of it like when you unload your gun on someone and they don't die, but they shoot you once and your dead and i know head shot right no just shoot you. they also need to fix the servers.

Re: Review of Socom
I know this will upset some of the Socom diehards, and I will read their explanations with a clear mind. However, this game is just like snoresville to me. I am a loyal COD player. I will be getting COD5 and honestly will give RFOM2 a shot as well ( as long as its better than Socom).
I just think Socom is a slightly glorified PS2 game. Its very slow and boring. Please dont tell me it takes any skill, cause it certainly doesnt. Its just clunky and hard to move around. Same thing over and over. You cant communicate in the dead room with the other team.
The maps are pretty bad ass, no doubt about it. With no respawn, it BLOWS! I am not in actual battle here. I am looking ot run around shoot people or die, not camp so i dont get killed and I can "play" longer.
Push 2 talk is fine, but with the new MUTE feature on COD and i assume RFOM, its not really necessary.
Just seems like i play 3 hours and get 5 kills and 5 deaths total. I will give it another try or two maybe, but its going back pretty soon.
I am keeping the bad ass headset though

Re: Review of Socom
Definitly lean much more to your side AJ, I have enjoyed playing it, and even glad I bought it but even forgiving them for the server problems (which all of them have had), I guess with the ps3 coming up on 2 yrs now, and what we have seen with COD4 and even RFOM at release, this game, does not break any new ground or do anything better then whats been out there all ready, if anything it dropped some things that the other games are doing that have attracted alot of users, like the perks and levelling, the use of cover systems, etc... That have been out there for awhile.
With that being said I do have fun playing, and they do have one thing over the other games, which I do wish they would copy from Slant 6 is the choice of servers, instead of just forcing you into a game. COD really needs to look at that. The Rainbow Six series also lets you look at all the servers and choose which one you want.
Guess I was just looking for a little more then what we got.

I'll start this out by saying that many guys that prefer the 1st-person shooter games, will probably not have good things to say about SOCOM. I have played SOCOM since the first one came out on PS2. I've always been a fan of the 3rd-person view (SOCOM, GTA).
This game is amazing and is a great upgrade from SOCOM II (I won't even acknowledge SOCOM III b/c it was HORRIBLE).
I love the big maps, having the freedom to run all over the place - which is much better than being stuck in a band box and fighting it out. There's more strategy involved in the bigger maps.
In the end - I think it all comes down to what each person's preference is - COD or SOCOM.

To me COD and I assume RFOM have everything SOCOM has besides the whole 1st/3rd person game. Thus playing SOCOM just feels like a giant step back in time for me.
I am not trying to discourage anyone or sway anyone, just stating my opinion.
My main thing is want to play a fun game with as many guys as possible from NDL. Having said that, I personally am not willing to play a game i am not a fan of just to play with the crew. Stinks cause that really is the most fun part.

Re: Review of Socom
I liked COD4 but I thought it was too arcadish. Everyone would just run and gun. Communication was straight up retarded and you couldnt hear what anyone was saying anyways. The ranking is borderline retarded as you can become a "5 star generl" even if you suck at the game based soley on the point system.
In SOCOM there is a communication and some strategy involved. The ranking is more realistic and I love the maps. just wish they had more old school maps. Id love to play vigilance, Fishhook, Sujo, and Enowapi again.

Re: Review of Socom
I respect your opinion, but please can everyone stop talking about COD and the open mic. about 7 months ago they patched in a MUTE feature where you can mute anyone on your team. thus, communication shouldnt be an issue.

Re: Review of Socom
Dont think your seeing the problems some guys have with open mic. Its not a mute issue casue socom has a mute for the douche that wont stay off the mic also. Guys dont wanna sit there and listen to some douche breath into the mic all game or dont wanna hear their conversation with everyone else in their room with them. Socoms mic system cuts all that stuff out. If you have something to say to your team you press O if not noone wants to hear you and what ever else you got going on around you. Also when you have 15 people trying to talk at once thats a communication issue with a open mic.ajalves wrote:I respect your opinion, but please can everyone stop talking about COD and the open mic. about 7 months ago they patched in a MUTE feature where you can mute anyone on your team. thus, communication shouldnt be an issue.

Then why keep on bringing up the mute stuff for COD if you understand why people dont like the open mic?ajalves wrote:~~~~EDIT~~~~

Re: Review of Socom
I stopped reading at the bolded part but my browser has this "anti-pussy" plugin for people who complain about no respawn. I will admit that CoD4 is a great game, but the game is useless unless you play it on hardcore search and destroy. Respawn is what is wrong with online games today. It gives people no sense of teamwork if as soon as they die they are alive again.ajalves wrote:I know this will upset some of the Socom diehards, and I will read their explanations with a clear mind. The most successful online shooter ever, Counter Strike, was and still is that successful because of the teamwork involved and if you die, you're dead. If Call of Duty didn't have hardcore search and destroy, it would be pointless to own.
This is only my opinion but unless you are trying to learn the game and/or maps, respawn servers no good in online shooters, but to each his or her own.

Re: Review of Socom
i hear you Matt. unfortunately, im not 20. i have things i need top do and thus not tons of disposable time to camp around a video game learning shit. I get about 3 hours a night to play if i dont have softball, something with the kids, or hanging out with the wife....its boring as hell when the game starts, i poke my head around the building immediately in front of my teams spawn, and then i get sniped by Tball and then have to sit there for 8 minutes while guys on my team camp wiating on someone to walk by ....
Im all for teamwork....very fun aspect of shooter games. Ill play hardcore on COD all you want....gimme a shout. Your comments only address one issue of mine.
Lets make a deal, you dont call me a pussy for enjoying respawn games and i wont call you one for being metrosexual. Cool

Re: Review of Socom
I only tease you. Hell, I think you're better at SOCOM than I am. Anyway, I don't have a lot of time either. When it comes down to SOCOM and COD and their touted "realism" aspects, it better damn well be realistic. If people want respawn, Unreal Tourney, Resistance and Gears should be the options. 3 games that have terrible multiplayer in my opinion.ajalves wrote:i hear you Matt. unfortunately, im not 20. i have things i need top do and thus not tons of disposable time to camp around a video game learning shit. I just see time after time developers putting more focus on respawn modes than the opposite. What ends up happening are maps that are made with respawn in mind and thus lose their realistic and tactical edge. Call of Duty is a rare exception--for the most part.

Re: Review of Socom
If it was up to me, i'd take the COD game to SOCOM maps. The maps are pretty expansive and cool as shit.

Re: Review of Socom
Not to dig at old wounds but the Socom mic system is superior to COD and RFOM. Even if you mute people on those games you can still hear the person thru other mics. I know we ran into it several times on RFOM where not muting one person was enough. Every person in your party would have to mute the same person to really get rid of the person.
As for maps, Socom is again tops. I’m really shocked how well the maps look. In fact, they look so good that they throw me off. Sometimes it takes me a minute to figure out where I am on the old maps.
I don’t mind the dead room or anything like that. It’s actually fun when people are on and shooting the shit. Unfortunately, a lot of personalities are no longer in the NDL.
My gripe, and it’s big, is that I can’t stand 3rd person anymore. It took me forever to be able to play first person without turning retarded but 1st person if far superior to 3rd person. It makes you feel more into the game. The entire aiming system blows away 3rd person. Even moving around is much better in 1st.
As mentioned by others, the other problem is that 2 very popular shooters came out before Socom. RFOM and COD4 were excellent and have left Socom feeling a bit dated and sluggish.
I will continue to play for sure. However, the shelf life for this game is short for me. I will be moving on to R2 in Nov. From what I’ve seen of R2 it is back on track to being a huge game. COD5 is a possibility. With R2 borrowing from COD it might be easier to switch back and forth between games.

Re: Review of Socom
I can see why people like and dislike this game. My other half can relate to you AJ. Absolutely loved COD4. When this game got closer to coming out, we had many talks about what made this game so different from the typical shooters. Not having respawns and the dreaded "dead" room really was a real turn off.
Personally the SOCOM-style is something that I've grown accustomed to playing over the years so I'm fine it. I can see why others aren't so fond of it though. Teamwork is emphasized on different levels between games, but watching more than playing isn't going to appeal to everyone. Just the same with games like Unreal and Halo. Different styles are going to appeal to different people. I myself am amped for R2. It will be a nice change of pace to go along with this game.
I will say though the dead room has helped me a bunch with school. I'm a huge procastinator so I tend to try to play games while doing those big assignments though I know I shouldn't. SOCOM provides some nice breaks for me to get things done. Got most of my psych midterm done last night playing with you guys
