Golfers
Golfers
Been wanting to start learning how to play for a couple of years now. Any tips for a beginner? Gonna buy some cheapo clubs with my tax refund. My main concern is being taller than avg. (6'4") should I worry about getting longer clubs or just play with whatever their standard length in pre packaged sets are, until I get get better and accustomed to the game?
Re: Golfers
I guarantee, if I hadn't posted that, you would have completely whiffed the ball and made a complete ass out of yourself.
Fucker.
Fucker.

Re: Golfers
No matter what height you are its encouraged to get your clubs custom fitted. But as a beginner its not worth the extra cost or effort. As for tips...Matt gave some good ones...Keep your head down and eye on the ball all the way through the swing. Keep your knees bent throughout the swing as well. Also remember to swing all the way through the ball, turning so your belt is facing the target. The best thing you can do is play often.
Re: Golfers
You probably want clubs with an extra inch of length in the grip. They'll help you being taller not having to stoop over as much.
Re: Golfers
go to the range for about 2 months straight before thinking about stepping on a course... that'd be my advice
i started playing like 3 years ago, i had a TERRIBLE baseball players swing and i just kept going to the range and working on making solid contact initially then i started talking to my buddies who played well and asking them for some pointers.
my biggest thing i learned that made me WAY better was not to try to crush the ball... just let the club do the work. i was playing like 3 times a week and played mostly in the mid 90's/low 100's. i dont see myself getting much better unless i get professional lessons.

Re: Golfers
Great advice dan, personally i wouldnt go get fitted til you ve played awhile, hell im 6 3 and still have the fat shafts i bought 10yrs ago. My biggest problem is i play softball 3 nights a week in the summer and although some may say it makes your golf game better for me i notice that i have the chicken wing going and slice the heck out of the ball. Either way im just a hack, but its still fun....Just sucks aiming so far left to hit the middle of the fairway...sixpackdan101 wrote:No matter what height you are its encouraged to get your clubs custom fitted. Re: Golfers
i would find a swing you like and try to replicate it on the range for a while.
Do something basic (no Furyk) and just get used to hitting the ball in the air.
Once you can consistently get the ball in the air I think you can move to a course, but be careful because it's pretty demoralizing if you perform far below expectations. I pretty much quit the game because I'm nowhere near where I used to be and it sucks, but just never put too much pressure on yourself and you should be fine

agree with this except the steppin gon the course part
get out there and stink it up. find some cheap course....dont pussy out on an actualy score....write your actual score..even if you get a fucking 150+
save those cards to to remind yourself how much better youve gotten when you get to 120...110.....you break 100 for the 1st time
everything else dave said though..hit the range as much as possible
in the beginning dont even worry too much about all the tips you'll get from friends or the internet.
just learn a basic proper grip and swing til you start making good contact
once you form a solid foundation and can approach 100/110, THEN you can start honing your swing, your tempo, your stance, your grip some more and start thinking about the HUNDRES of things that can go through your miind before each swing
last thing...have fun man...make a game outta it....find someone who sucks equally bad and play skins or match play
i guess one more thing..if u played any baseball....it can be overstate denough but as riccio said, dont try to crush it....we're telling you this..other people will tell you this...you will be thnking this...yet..when you swing..it will just come out naturally to put a little "somthing" into your swing.....the sooner you break this habit, the sooner you will REALLY start turning a corner and getting better

Re: Golfers
shit...1 more thing
the driver really is the hardest club to hit accurately consistently
use it for fun but find a nice little 3 wood or even 5 wood and learn to be accurate with it
it doesnt seem like much difference and you'll wanan big dowg it but you really can learn to hit a 5 wood way quicker than a driver
i have a 5 wood that my grandpa gave me that looks like it was the 1st non wood 5 wood ever made.....but i can hit fairway 80% of the time with it
(stupid pride though makes me of course leave it in the bag and grab big boy....but do as i say...not as i do

Re: Golfers
When is the next Williston Greater Invitational and BBQ anyways??
I agree with Nolie. Hit a crappy course and get out there and see how it goes.
Sure hit the range a couple times first but see how you do on the course. Make sure to pick a crappy one on a slow day though.

see, this is why i said not to go on a course.Cnasty wrote:Make sure to pick a crappy one on a slow day though.
i am mortified when i'm on a course and i'm holing the group back or people are playing down my back. if i hit the ball in another fairway i get so freaked out that sometimes i won't even get my ball

i guess its cause i'm playing a lot of nicer courses with guys who are WAY better then i am, but i just feel like i shouldn't be on the course unless i can be respectable.
so what corey said was right... go late in the day when the course is slow and go to a shitty place.

Re: Golfers
As far as clubs go I wouldn't get fitted clubs until you are comfortable with your swing. Take lessons if you really want to learn to play. It all starts with your grip. Learn the proper grip to start out with and your swing will work itself out. Don't try to kill the ball. Tempo is much more important than power and once you get your swing grooved you'll be hitting the ball much farther without trying to kill it. And make sure you count all your strokes. 90% of all golfers never legitimately break 100.
Fuck the "in the leather" BS (It doesn't even mean what it is supposed to. It is supposed to be the length of the grip, not the length of the club), and make all your putts.
A drop counts as 2 strokes and should be played from where you hit the ball out of bounds from not where it went out of bounds.
And ask Michelle Wie about grounding your club in a hazard or a bunker.(yes bunker, not sand trap)
Leave your mulligans on the practice range.
If you don't count all your strokes you will never really be able to tell if you are getting better. The only one you are cheating is yourself.

I don't rally for shit that should be obvious. Canada might like a stupid sport, but for the most part your citizens arent as stupid as ours.nick wrote:Don't you have a gay rights rally to be at?Matt90210 wrote:nick wrote:Golf sucks. Never understood why people enjoy it so much.
