All White Basketball League in the Works

The headline in Tuesday's Augusta Chronicle certainly gets your attention: "Basketball League for White Americans Targets Augusta." But the town best known for the Masters, which was a whites-only event until Lee Elder became the first African-American to tee it up in 1975, is balking at the idea of a whites-only basketball team.

Something called the All-American Basketball Alliance announced over the weekend that it plans to start its inaugural season in June and hopes Augusta is one of 12 cities to host a team. With the one stipulation, of course: "Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league," the statement reads in part.

August Mayor Deke Copenhaver, who according to the Chronicle has previously expressed support for minor league teams, won't be doing so this time.

"As a sports enthusiast, I have always supported bringing more sporting activities to Augusta," he said. "However, in this instance I could not support in good conscience bringing in a team that did not fit with the spirit of inclusiveness that I, along with many others, have worked so hard to foster in our city."

But wait -- before you assume that this is blatant racism, AABA commissioner Don "Moose" Lewis wants you to know that it's not that sinister. Nope. It has to do with removing the And 1 element from the game."There's nothing hatred about what we're doing," he said. "I don't hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here's a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like."

Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of "street-ball" played by "people of color." Right. Like, say, The Professor (but he can shoot 3s!).

I would love to hear Lewis' pitch to potential investors. "I want to create a league the emphasizes bounce passes, the weave, set shots, peach baskets ... anything that stifles creativity."

well last weekend i witnessed just ridiculous racism... like shit i didnt possibly imagine was still in existance.

i was at a bar and a group of white dudes got cut off by a black bartender... i'm mortified to even type what these guys said to this guy and even what they said they were going to do to him... and we were in a nice hotel lobby bar. The worst part is how the bartender just nodded and continued doing his job, i realize he was being professional but it just seemed like it was 'oh, another racist prick' type of blow off he gave them... we shouldn't still live like this, its fucking such lazy thinking and that drives me NUTS.

I don't see the problem here. The idea is stupid and won't work but whatever. If people wanted to watch a game with good fundamentals and no dunking, they'd watch the boring-as-fuck WNBA. That said, don't get too riled up about this because, for one, it ain't going to work. Also, it isn't like there aren't collectives that consist only for women or for blacks. It also isn't as if the NBA - the only big time professional league - is saying "NO BROTHERS!!!!" A black man should take this league as a compliment!

Also, while we are here, I am still angry over the fact that men cannot play in the LPGA but women can play in the PGA. Now that is discrimination.

Stole this from a blog I frequent, here are some responses to this ignorant idea.....

A “below the surface” story in the last few days has been the attempt by a businessman in the South to start an “All-White Professional Basketball League.” The individual has come up with a plan that would include teams in 12 Southern cities and the notion that fans would flock out to see the best in ball screens and scrappy defense that a man could find. One of the mayors of the towns proposed (Augusta, Ga) has already said he isnt interested and the league is likely to go nowhere. But that doesnt stop us from wondering…what would such a league look like?

Today on Twitter, some of the funnier college basketball journalists proposed some rule changes and events in the All-White League. Some highlights:

I play COD on a nightly me along with some black friends of mine,I am not black I am mexican and I apparently sound black on the mic but anyways we hear the "N" word on a nightly my friends. It is downright ignorant and a damn shame!What starts off as a simple shit talking as we all have seen on MW2 and then because they/me/us sound black or are black they have to pull out the ultimate and say the N word! For instance last night some dudes call us out,out of nowhere and we gets to playing and we own them on two matches of domination and then after that the ole N word comes out after some more shit talkin of course! Unbelieveable but it is still out there guys!

People are always big and tough when there is no face to face. What pains me is the little kids that throw the N word around all night. You can tell they are 10, 11, 12, whatever. But you are right, fricken' ignorant people...

Ya know, this also ruins something else; rooting for the white guys (or black guys). How can you if they are all the same?! For instance, I get a kick out of Toby Gerheart, Kelly Pavlik and Steve Nash and, on the other hand, guys like Jerome Iginla. It's a little something different and it is charming. It is fun to root for the white guy just as much as it is fun to watch Iginla tear up hockey.
