You all have some good looking dogs. And to answer the Pit question, I definitely think it is the owner. They are loyal and smart dogs, eager to please the owner. If the owner wants aggression, that's what they do. My parents have a pit/lab mix, and she's an awesome dog. They were actually bred to be submissive to humans. Any dog can be bad if they are not raised properly.

To answer your question Dray, I'm a big rescue dog guy. There are breeds I love like boxer, great dane, newfoundland, lab, multiple spaniel breeds, and some others, but there are some many dogs that need adopted that I have a hard time not going that route. Mutts usually have less health problems and a good demeanor. They also seem to be greatful for the second chance. Here's my two:

Image

Sarah...think she's Australian Shepard/Rotweiler/Cocker Spaniel/Lab, but not sure. She's smart and loyal, and really friendly. We got her in the Orlando pound, and haven't had one regret. Great dog. She was about 6 months old when we got her.

Image

Lily...Boxer/American Foxhound mix we believe. She's a very loving dog. Little weary around strangers, but once she knows you, she's a friend for life. Definitely alerts you if people are outside. She's a natural hunting dog...you should see her go in the woods (I don't hunt, but she'd be good at it). We adopted her at a pound here in WV...she was about 4 years old when we got her.

My girl is a rescue as well, and I can say that I think that is by far the best way to go. There are plenty of great dogs that people went out and bought from breeders or whatever and then decided they didn't have the time for them. Rescue/adoption is their only real chance. I'd advice looking not only at the local SPCA shelter but also looking online for local rescue groups that may specialize in the kind of dog you're looking for. There's a rescue group out there for every dog you can imagine and they've often times already gone around to shelters and gotten the dogs of that breed (especially the ones that are the most adoptable/best temperament).

Our dog is also a rescue dog. She is the best dog I have ever had. Taught her some really cool tricks and she is the chillest dog you could imagine.

Are you a believer that a PIT is what the owner makes them? I know all the stories.
There is one next to my dads house that all he does is bark at my kids while they play in the yard next to him.
Would you trust your PIT next to any kids?

LOL that middle pic looks like she just messed up something she was not supposed to lol.
A Pit Bull is exactly what the owner puts into them. I consider Nesta an ambassador for Pit Bulls. I've had her since she was 4months and I can bring her anywhere because I've taken the time to teach her how to act. The only thing I have to worry about with my dog is her jumping up with adults that don't giver her a correction. As for children I'm not afraid at all. I've had people take babies and plop them next to her and take a picture. Another huge factor into children is I will pull and tug on her ears, tail and feet playing around. This makes her used to it when younger kids will play rough with her. This is also a dog I can leave food at her head level and walk out of the room and not worry about it. The key to raising any dog is exactly what Ceaser Milan says, rules, limitations and boundaries. You teach a dog what those are and you'll have a fantastic dog no matter what breed it is.

A research of aggressive breeds. Figured a couple small dogs would be up top. Pit Bulls #6 ahead of Beagles, Border Collies.

Thats right bitches, dont fuck with the Doxies!!

Their background story and how they were bred for is pretty cool.

My male one thinks he is a german when any other dogs get close to me, its pretty hilarious.

Not all the time, but he has his moments, that is for sure. He is a chewer, which drives me nuts. I am starting to get him those rawhide bones and them to help a little.

what is a puggle? I cant think of the name combo of other dogs to make that name.

as far as a pitbull is concerned, I agree that a dog is what its owner makes it, but I just dont wanna take that chance w/ kids and if we have people over to the house. I love the look of them and dobermans, and German Shepards and Rottweilers, but just have heard too many of them showing aggressive tendencies, worst of all many times it is when it is least expected.

One of the sweetest dogs I knew was a Rottweiler-just a huge dog, but basically the only damage it would do to anyone would be to bump into you to make you pet him.

Just dont wanna chance it though.

Kdog, we played a july 4th tourney this year and it was an all nighter. We all camped out, my buddy brought his pit bull for the night and my wife brought our two labs. All dogs got along great. In the morning my white lab sniped and growled at the pit bull, that dog never did anything but wag its tail. Definitely the owner bud. I never heard that dog bark once the whole weekend. My dogs on the other hand........lol

I have a rescued German Shepard for a pet now and he's a great pet. He doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body. He's a huge dog, big for a German Shepard, and is intimidating to look at. The only problem with him is he whines or moans all the time. I asked other owners of GS's and they all say the dogs are very vocal.
I deliver mail for the USPS and see all kinds of dogs. The best pets I've seen are the adopted Greyhounds. Beautiful dogs, great with kids, and very friendly, if you can find one of these to adopt, I recommend it.
Rotts, Pitts, and Dobies all get bad raps as far as being aggressive. It is all about the owner. I've had friends with all 3 of these dogs and most of them were great pets. Of course there were a couple which were trained to be aggressive and they were. They were guard dogs and not pets and you didn't want to mess with them at all. I also have some pitts on my route and the only danger with them is getting licked to death.
