So my big boy PS3 is dying. I am going tomorrow to get a new one....But the question I have is will my "stuff" be on my new one once I log into my account? I know I will have to do the file share thing for photo's etc to transfer....my old PS3 is turning off after a few mins....How long does that transfer take? I wonder if I will have enough time to complete the transfer?

You'll like the upgrade. Which one you getting?
Depends on the GB's. Mine took nearly 3 or 4 hours and I only have maybe 20 GB's. It's real slow, and you cant use a crossover cable, so make sure you get that one right. It took me about 4 tries before I figured it out.
The only thing that you will keep automatically are your trophies when you log in to the new PS3 and PSN.

I just recently did this so if you need any help or have ? just AIM me. Im off the next cpl days.

so will I need to purchase a special cable for that transfer? I think the gamestop I was going to go to only has a 160 GB...I am totally clueless is that a good number? Could I go with a smaller one? I really don't use it much for anything other then playing COD, NCAA, and netflix and hulu...

yeah 160 is the smallest they make now. I have a 120GB and the same 160GB. I dont use it for music or videos, just games and photos. So you should be fine.
Here are the instructions to complete the transfer.
http://manuals.playstation.net/document ... ility.html
As far as the cable goes,
Using an Ethernet cable, make a direct connection between the two PS3™ systems. You can use either an Ethernet straight-through cable or an Ethernet crossover cable.
Looks like I was wrong here. But the video I saw on YouTube showed him not using an X-Over cable. Oh and make sure BOTH systems have the newest version of the PS System Update. I think it's 4.11 right now.

cool....I am pretty sure I don't have a cross over cable...

so it will be an ethernet cable.....I might have to look up the youtube walk through because just looking at the manual seemed a little confusing to me...but a youtube video might work out.

So I got the new one today....I think I am going to be stuck without being able to transfer. I turned the old one on again today to try and it shut off within 5 mins....would it be faster to take everything off if I have just an external hard drive????probably not that fast....the guy at gamestop told me to put it in the fridge to get it "nice and cold"....then try it might give me more time?

Oh damn dude.mthat sucks! Man im not sure. I mean you could try that fridge thing. Youre not going to use it for anything else once you get ur stuff transferred over right? And i also dont know about the external HD thing. What did youtube have to say? Maybe theres another way to get ur data off the old HD besides these aformentioned methods?

Get a case for your old ps3 hd. They are pretty cheap. Then you can reformat it after you grab all your stuff off of it and use it as an external.
My pc just died a couple weeks ago and I grabbed 2 cases for the drives I had in it and now have 2 more external drives.

Yeah. You pulled your hard drive out of the PS3. Now you just need a
case like this to put it in. Then you can keep the hard drive for an external.

Oh that is sweet. The guy at game stop was telling me I was going to need to buy an external hard drive and those are like over a hundred bucks. So that case is like an adapter for the hard drive I took out of my ps3??? Thanks for your help

I don't know how big your hard drive was on your old ps3 but this is an alternative to buying a larger external hard drive. Keep in mind you can buy 64 gb thumb drives for around $32 or so. If you had an 80 gb hd in your old ps3 this is quite a better deal than that. Even if you only have a 20 or 60 gb hd it is still only $11 you are spending and you will have that much extra space to store stuff.

It is a 60 hard drive. So the case does it have to be a certain one or size? I am going to stop at radio Shack to see what they have. Again it is like an adapter right?

It just has to be able to fit the hard drive from the PS3 in it. You need a case for a 2.5" SATA drive. The drive will pop right on to the adapter then you slide the case over it and put the screws in to hold it in place. Pretty easy to do.
Radio Shack is going to be more expensive than Best Buy or a local computer shop.
