Evolution of the NDL

So here's a question to get some discussion going: How has the NDL changed in your time in the league? I'm not talking about just the cosmetic changes like the webite (which is awesome) and things like that. I mean the attitudes or atmosphere of the league.

I would have to say that it seems like the actual game (NCAA Football) has become more of an means to an end for a lot of people. I mean that I really think quite a few people just stay in the league and play the game for the boards and other non-football game related stuff whereas it used be that people joined the league to play the game in a way they wanted to.

Being here since the beginning, I think you are right Peay.

When you first get in you think you are good and want to win and show off your skills and what not. As you play longer you build relationships with people and it has become more about playing people you have gotten to know and have fun. yes, we still want to win, but most of us that isn't the main focus anymore. I think that is why some of us have rivalries with coaches and some of us look forward to playing some people we don't always play because we know it'll be fun either way.

i think people are just getting older.

video games are still a part of our lives but with so many other gaming options and the newness of the league wearing off, some people's NCAA care has faded.

i think the boards are filled with less and less good conversations. any good debate usually gets sidetracked by someone getting butthurt or someone taking it too far. the quality of league member has certainly diminished.

i will say... i was really upset when i opened this thread, i thought you had made some cool video like the 'evolution of dance' but themed with the NDL

agreed with all the above

the game was 90% of the league when we started with college football talk being 9% and 1% being other

now its about 25% video game and 75% everything else

When I joined I was interested in seeing how well I could do and tried to take my team to a BCS game. Now, my only goal is to ruin others chances at a national championship.

You pushed me this way Dave. At first, I tried to fight it, but now I gladly accept it.

I am kidding of course.

I think a lot of that has to do with the game itself. The PS2 versions were simply better, as odd as that sounds.

i do think we've added some nice members lately tho too.

guys like brwnbear stepping up, uuaww has helped some, etc

its just we haven't weeded out the bad apples in the same manner i remember in the past. i would guess that has alot to do with the options we have in the farm and the lack of people who actually play the game or are looking for a league like ours.

True, I remember when bans were handed out like candy and 2-3 guys were thrown out at the end of each season.

Honestly I think there has always been people that just wanted to win at all cost in this league but its only a select few. I schedule my friends when I need to fill games so I dont worry about to much about it anymore but you always get one bad egg that makes the game just unbearable to play. I hate naming names so lets just say dont kissme but maybe a hug would be nice. lol

I think the league has just become a big community of guys that talk about life events and other random things, which i honestly dont mind. I love readying what people write but the activity is not what it was when I first came into the league. Again I just play for fun so dont really care about the game as much as some people but the community is why a lot of us stick around. I still think the game is fun just am not all about winning awards and caring about winning as long as EA stays out of the game and people dont stay in zone defense and run slants and 5 yard passes all game. A blind monkey can do that.

Do you guys think that it would have been better to switch to the xbox360 rather then the ps3? It just seems like the community over is a lot bigger then the ps3 community. I love my ps3 but the online competition on the ps3 is weak.

Cant happen now. Guys know it.

Different commishes run things in different ways. Despite my asshole-ish image, I let a lot more things slide board wise, that in hindsight maybe I shouldn't have, not that i'd change it.

Also, right before and then when I took over the Farm REAAALLY started drying up. If you get 4 or 5 quality guys from the Farm nowadays, per version, its a miracle.

The fact that NDL has been around 23 LEGIT seasons is really something.

its not a 32 team Madden league, its 120 guys/personalities.

I wish guys would get in and mix it up (in a good way) on the boards and in the sub leagues.

it stopped being about the game for me when I realized I sucked at NCAA, '04 or so. I enjoy talking on the boards, gives me stuff to do at work. I live in the middle of nowhere so finding guys who play PS3 is few and far, nice to play every now and then. I personally buy NCAA ONLY for the NDL. I am not joking, will play between 35-40 games A YEAR. I ONLY play league games, nothing else. The game isn't important to me that much.

Topics like this put us all on edge though, is the league dying? I don't think so, just that NCAA is taking a back seat. It's not common for non-BCS teams to only play 9 games a season and simmed the rest. Should some guys be booted? probably, but why bother, not like we have a good line coming in anyways.

NDL is fine. Will be for a while.

I like the new guys who have come in lately.

i'm sure i'll be under the gun for this, but it is what it is.

I honestly don't play video games anymore and I would have sold my ps3 and never thought about it again if I wasn't in the league, so that's a huge change from wanting to play lobby games to practice like i did back in my early days in this league.

While I wasn't here in the early days, I think the constant shit games EA puts out has been a major factor in losing members and the deterioration of the boards because we collectively spend more time on here rather than playing the game. That extra time on here I think raises the chances for disagreements and that increases exponentially when one-hundred other people have access to those normally one-to-one conversations and they can help stir things up
