Performance Pay (revisited)

Post by ajalves »

this is my high school, happened yesterday:
3 students arrested, 1 Taser-stunned at Pine Ridge High in Deltona

Three students were arrested at Pine Ridge High School in Deltona on Thursday, one of them a marijuana salesman who was zapped twice with a Taser for scuffling with two deputies, according to an arrest report.

Wilbur Fredrick Miller II was handcuffed after he became violent with a school resource deputy and an assisting deputy who responded to the high school on Howland Boulevard.

The 18-year-old student was shot twice with a Taser by Volusia County sheriff's deputy Vincenzo Vento, the report says. Vento had to shoot Miller twice because the first deployment was ineffective, the report says. Only one of two prongs punctured Miller's arm on the first shot, the report shows.

Miller became violent with the school resource deputy after the deputy asked Miller if he could search him for marijuana, the report shows.

Sometime after 9 a.m. Thursday, the school resource deputy found a female student in possession of four plastic bags of marijuana, the report shows. The girl told the school deputy she had gotten the pot from a student she knew only as "Fred," the report shows.

The school resource deputy called for backup and Vento reported to the school, the report shows. The two deputies then contacted Miller and told him top step into the cafeteria, which was empty at that hour of the morning. Miller consented to a search and when the school resource deputy found marijuana on the teen, Miller turned away and began resisting, the report says.

Miller would not obey commands by the deputies and flailed his arms. At that point, Vento warned Miller he would deploy his Taser, the report shows. Vento shot Miller, but only one prong stuck in the teenager's arm, the report says. That did nothing to stop Miller, who then ran out into a courtyard. There were several other students on break from their classes in the area and they watched the ordeal unfold between Miller and the deputies.

Vento yelled at Miller to stop again or he would be shot, the report shows. When Miller kept going, he was zapped again, this time getting hit in the lower back, the report shows.

The two deputies climbed on top of Miller after they handcuffed him in an effort to calm him down, the report shows. Deputies then found $219 in the student's pocket arranged, "in such a way ... to distribute change to potential drug customers."

Several students in the courtyard began yelling, "(expletive deleted) the Police!" the report shows. One student got closer and continued to yell the obscenity, the report shows. That teenager -- whose name was not available because he's a minor -- was arrested and charged with resisting arrest without violence, the report says.

The female student who was initially stopped with four bags of marijuana also was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana on school grounds, the report shows.

They want to base my future pay on an equation that has kids like this factored in?

I have mixed feelings about teachers being payed based on performance of their students.

For instance, I attended HS in HISD ( Houston Independent School District) the school I attended was mostly a minority low income school. 70% of the school was Hispanic, 26% was Black, and our other pop was larger then the what pop. Also of the school I believe 80% was on the free lunch program since Elementary (although no one was brave enough to really use their free lunch anymore in HS.)

I would have to say about 60% of all the students there were probably just happy to get their HS diploma and had no goals of going to college. So only cared just enough to get by, and some didn't even care about that and just went to school to socialize. I would say not including the magnet program that existed in our HS, which was separated from the general study body of the school only 20% of all students cared about going to college.

This is was then I think creates the problems in public school system, specially in low income areas. As a result of many students not really caring, you get teachers who don't care, and as a result the 20% of students that do care suffer. I remember many teachers who just gave busy work to keep us busy and really not teach us a damn thing but as long as we were busy copying crap out the book, we were not causing trouble. Many of the students at my school were passed through just to get them out as long as they were not disruptive to the class as a whole.

So while you may have a teacher here or there that care enough to really focus on the 20% that do care about their education, the majority of teachers at least at my school seemed to give up, which then hurts that 20% and maybe the few of the 60% that you may have influenced to become one of the 20% by showing hey there is someone out there that cares about your future.
What ends up happening is that 20% when graduating and maybe getting into college are grossly under prepared for the rigors of college, and many don't make it pass their first year.

Though all 4 years of HS, I coasting through, I graduated with 3.9 GPA despite missing more days then I attended, I had one teacher one who said that the way I was coasting through HS was gonna hurt me in college, while others just commented on me being a bright kid who just needed to come to school more. And when I got to college .. yep I was unprepared, I was in for a rude awakening.. I pretty much was like Trendon where I thought I could just show up on test days and be good. lol not true.. My first semester was horrible to say the least.

Now what about the others who even in low income area wanna make something out of themselves but really had to work even HS to do well, how ill prepared will they be for college and beyond because the some teachers didn't care enough to do more then busy work because they didn't care anymore for one reason or another.

How do you reward the teachers that do care how can you tell, It is tough, I have a great respect for teachers who do still care specially at low income schools where a majority of students don't care and wont care no matter how much you try to reach them. But there are students that are in need of reaching and want to be but wont and fall through the cracks because there are so many bad teachers that are rewarded for tenure or longevity or what have you.

Something needs to change that is for sure, but I really don't know what, If it was up to me I would probably say scrap the system and start over from beginning .. Because overall the public school system in most areas just doesn't work .

* NO shel notes, didn't proofread sorry.. so I hope it made sense and my point found itself somewhere in there if you read it. *

That was me through and through. Coasted through HS (just came way too easy) except one class, that one class gave me an idea of what college would be like but I also assumed "hey, it's easy now, I'll just show up, take the tests, and be fine" and I goofed off my first semester, almost cost me.

In four years of HS (and this was in an area where many of the kids came from decent families but still had little plans of college) I maybe had two teachers who ever really pushed me to think or apply myself. Those teachers really wanted their kids to do well but in the end, they weren't able to get much out of the classes because the kids just didn't care enough. That's a big reason why I'm against performance pay. As the old saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.

I'm the exact same. I actually stopped showing up to a class I had an 80 in :? because I couldn't stand the teacher and the work was too boring. It was business and I'd miss 3 days, come in and be caught up. rinse repeat.

It 100% backfired. College was a colossal failure. Other than the course being boring as dick and teaching me how to be an insurance broker, I was just not prepared. Fuckin' sucks.

the public school system scares me. It starts withe the parents or lack thereof. Where my kids live with their mother is lower income. Elementary schools are good but the middle schools and high schools are not good. My oldest got into a charter school where the college rate is 100%. It is tough but well worth it. Most of her 6th grade homework baffles me. :?

I make sure my girls appreciate their teachers for what they do. It bothers me that parents will blame the system for their child's failure. I always take the opportunity to thank the teachers. I do not approve the public school system because of a small percentage of the kids that only go to school to cause trouble.
