Receiver Problems -- NEED ADVICE

Ok so here's the deal. A few months back my Harman Kardon receiver (AVR 247) stopped outputting to the subwoofer. Everything else worked fine there was just no bass. It was only 2.5 years old but out of warranty and I didn't buy the extended warranty from Best Buy. HK tech support told me that my receiver needed a software upgrade. Long story short, I ended up paying some mom and pop shop here in Austin $70 to do the upgrade for me (they were the ONLY place in Austin that services HK out of warranty). Got my receiver back, I have bass again, all is good.
Fast forward a few months to now, I get home, turn on my shit, and my receiver makes a vibrating noise and powers back off after being on for a few seconds. Normally, when the receiver is "off," the power button is an amber color. When it's on, it's blue and the front lcd screen shows all the statuses and stuff. So now it's off and the power button is still amber, but when i try to turn it on, the power button will turn blue for like 10 seconds but power back off on it's own. The front lcd won't display anything now.
So here's my question(s). Any tech guys out there have any idea what might be going on now? I'll be damned if I take it back to that one place to have it fixed again (another story, another day). Should I just break down and get a new one? I'm definitely not buying another HK that's for sure, but shit, I spent $500 on this one and it barely lasted me 3 years. I've heard Onkyo is good, what else do I need to be looking for in a new receiver if I do decide to get one? All I know is that I need at least 5.1 surround and at least 3 HDMI ports (cable box, PS3, xBox). Any type of upconvert technology for the TV would be nice since I do have a 1080p tv.
Thanks for any help guys.
