When my son was around that age, I bought him a Leapster and he enjoyed it thoroughly. There are some great educational games that really let them have fun while gaining some basic knowledge in math, reading and comprehension, along with others.

I don't know much about the Leapster 2, but I can only imagine that it is even better.

Hope this helps.

I got my youngest ( 6 in January) a DIDJ for Christmas. I hope he likes it, he enjoyed it on the demo at the store. My oldest had the V-Tech thing, but he never got into it that much.

I thought the same thing until a couple posts made me feel like a dirty old man.

Our son had a V-Smile and a Leapster book (or was it a Leap Frog). Both are great, just make sure you mix educational with fun programs and that will keep your kid interested for a long time.

We got my son, who's 6 now, a Didj last Christmas and he loves it to death. I love the fact that it's kind of deceptively educational. The games are really cheap on Ebay too. He's begging for a DS now. I'm not sure if we're ready for the leap from educational to non-educational just yet.

yea that was the problem with my oldest, he also had non-educational at the same time as V-Tech, and V-tech lost the battle. But he is pretty good at MW2 for a 9 year old

All of my kids have the Vsmile handhelds and my oldest has the DSI. (The second of my 4 will be getting a DSI from Santa) my boy is the one Im concerned about. hes only 5 but hes not at all interested in the Vsmile. Only wants the DSI. I know they do have some educational games but to be honest, my problem is giving a 5 year old a gaming system thats worth over $150 bucks. He was careful with the Vsmile but still.

As for the 3 1/2 year old, go with the Vsmile or leapster. We had both and the enjoyed each thoroughly.

My youngest got a leapster 2 last christmas and enjoyed it. Works well on trips! This year she is 6 and really wanted a DS, so I got her a DS Lite and the oldest getting a DS. Had the VSmile as well. My oldest is on the Honor Roll as a 4th grader so she deserves it, while my youngest is on the Honor Roll in Kindegarten, so I figured she can spell her name, count to 10 and say her ABC's. I am a proud daddy 8-)
