Now that a little time has passed since our dear ol' Bassett Hound passed, everyone in the family is really missing having a dog around the house.

The wife had a daschund when she was younger, and brings those up, but I dont want one of those. I want a dog that is at least big enough to make people know it is a dog-no offense to any other daschund or small dog people out there-lol.

I was looking at Mastiffs and Shar Peis-this is all just initial research, not even really narrowing it down yet. As well, searching for English Bulldogs, for obvious reasons, but just too expensive to be honest, and after looking more at the Mastiffs they are pretty pricey as well.

It has to be a dog that can be fairly self sufficient during daytime. Is easy going on others, I dont want to worry about it getting aggressive with people, since we have people over from time to time. Hopefully, it would be ok being indoors a good bit, but doesnt constantly shed or need a ton of grooming.

Any thoughts?

I have a Shiba Inu (basically a smaller version of an Akita). Great apartment dogs as they are very cat like (they dont follow you around all that much once they are comfortable with you) and they don't bark... they howl a little bit like a wolf if they need something but its not very common. She's inside all day long except for her two 30 minute walks per day or on the weekend when i take her around with me.

edit: just reread your post, she does shed quite a bit now that i live in the heat all year, in NYC she barely shed

I had big dogs all my life growing up. My wife only had dachshunds. I didnt want one but once I got one, they are some of the coolest, most loyal dogs out there. Smart as hell. They are hunting dogs so they can be some little bad asses.

We just got a pup a couple months ago so we have 2.

Cosmo, half yellow lab half chow, 90lbs, sheds a ton mostly due to Chow half I guess, also has purple tongue, but everything else in his nature is lab

5 year old 100lb lab named Layla, or "Sadie" as Nole would call her, LOL.

I think she's pretty happy about having a real pool now that we moved compared to that one she can't fit in.

I have a jack russell terrier. Small and hyper, very hyper. Doesn't seem to be what your looking for though.

I've got a full blood Yellow Lab and a black lab, to go along with an American Staffordshire (Pitbull). Every since I was a little kid, ive always had a lab. They are my favorites even though they shed a ton alot.

I've had labs my entire life.

I have a pit bull, her name is Nesta, 6 years old 41 lbs.

Dray, I have two labs. Both a hundred pounds a piece. These are the coolest dogs in the world. Very laid back. They will bark if someone comes to the door but are very calm most of the time. Good with people and other dogs. Our two labs love the water. I havent upgraded pools yet but they definitely cant fit into the wall mart plastic pool together anymore. The white lab sheds but the brown dog i dont notice it too much. They are both the english style labs. Great dogs. Cant wait to see them around the kids......

We have 2 dogs both Britaney Spaniels. I mus t say they are two of the coolest dogs ever. They are very chill, affectionate, and dependable.

Dustie is the smallest one and Petey is the bigger one. Dustie is actually on the small side for the breed about 35 pounds and Petey is about 50 pounds but es a bit large for the breed.

Great looking dog Dak. I had a half collie half huskie mix that was the absolute best. Looked similar to this one.

I'm afraid of huskies ever since a local news story of one grabbing a new born out of its crib and slinging it around in its mouth like a doll. Thank god the baby lived but still scary as hell to think about.

Are you a believer that a PIT is what the owner makes them? I know all the stories.
There is one next to my dads house that all he does is bark at my kids while they play in the yard next to him.
Would you trust your PIT next to any kids?
