I've played basketball my whole life and I've always played during the winter. The only time I played during the Summer were for summer leagues or a travelling team.
They put basketball from Oct-Jun to help keep some kind of connection between the Big 3: NBA, NFL, MLB.
As the NFL season is winding down and MLB is starting, NBA is getting pretty good itself. This keeps sports junkies entertained.
NFL: Sept-Feb
MLB: March/April - Oct/Nov
NBA:Oct-Jun

Yo Ryan....just noticed you live in Normal....spent a few days there pre-marraige. pretty cool college town and from what I saw there are some really hot chicks for a middle of nowhere kind of place. At least all i was really privy to was the college life since I was there to do a presentation to ISU.
Cool place for sure.

I am sure its all weather based, as you can play baseball and football outside, when the weather is better, and then basketball indoors when the temperature drops.
Same reason as to why schools have a summer break, so that the kids can help the parents farm. With very few actually farming any more, it just never changed (although we are starting to see alot of year round schools).
I am thinking it was originally weather based, and it just never changed

Maybe we should look at the history of basketball.
- After serving as McGill's Athletic Director, James Naismith moved on to the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA in 1891, where the sport of basketball was born. In Springfield, Naismith was faced with the problem of finding a sport that was suitable for play inside during the Massachusetts winter for the students at the School for Christian Workers. Naismith wanted to create a game of skill for the students instead of one that relied solely on strength. He needed a game that could be played indoors in a relatively small space. The first game was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets used as goals. Naismith joined the University of Kansas faculty in 1898, teaching physical education and being a chaplain.
So that is why basketball is played in the winter time.

I'd counter with "Why is the NBA played at all?" but there are too many fans here.
I think they should play basketball outside in the summer, just like they should play hockey outside in the winter. I'd at least be intrigued by professional basketball then.
