Re: Random Discussions
So there's a 2nd video of that officer that was shot hiding behind the big pillars.
http://mediatakeout.com/mto-blockbuster ... reenshots/
You can see it at the :08 mark, then there's a slow mo close up at the end.
First of all, how brave/stupid is that the dude to take that video and, ya know, be running for his life.
2nd, what is going on with the random person walking about just a few feet away seemingly not even caring that there's a shootout going on right next to him?
That's weird. Could it be fake?

Re: Random Discussions
This Dallas Police Chief has really shined throughout this entire ordeal. Supposedly DPD used to get 100s of complaints per year, and he introduced new de-escalation classes or tactics, and the number dropped to something like in the 20s per year(don't know exactly, just what I recall hearing but you get the point)
All his interviews have been really riveting stuff to hear as well, the line about, "We don't feel supported most days. Let's not make today most days." was pretty chilling.
Here's another excellent article from recent events:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/pos ... 95d0024d44
Another article moreso about him, his son killed a cop and then was killed. He's also lost a former partner and brother to violence.

A bit heavy handed, but I like the overall point that is, if you don't like it, do something about it. These protests are not only doing no good, they're just making things worse.[/“We’re asking cops to do too much in this country,” Brown said at a briefing Monday. “We are. Every societal failure, we put it off on the cops to solve. Not enough mental health funding, let the cops handle it. Here in Dallas we got a loose dog problem; let’s have the cops chase loose dogs. Schools fail, let’s give it to the cops. That’s too much to ask. Policing was never meant to solve all those problems.”quote]
He also said that if he were confronted with the same perceived problems that have prompted demonstrations across the country, “I probably wouldn’t protest or complain. I’d get involved and do something about it, by becoming part of the solution.”
Brown later leveled a direct challenge to demonstrators: “We’re hiring. Get off that protest line and put an application in.”

Re: Random Discussions
Was watching CNN after his press conference and Don Lemon asked one of the founders of Black Lives Matters about his response that they were hiring and that they could help change everything within their communities. She wasn't having any of it, saying that we needed to put more money into counseling, schooling etc...
Most of these crime ridden areas are in areas where jobs are scarce and poverty runs rampant, why would she be against young black men trying to help their community from within? Makes no sense to me. It's almost as she was saying that it's easier to hold rallies and protest rather than to find a job that WOULD make a difference.

Re: Random Discussions
So arguing with my coworkers about 2 popular paradoxes. The first is Monty's Paradox from Let's Make a Deal.
Behind 3 doors are 2 donkey's and 1 car. The hosts knows the door with the car and asks you to pick one. After you choose he opens one of the doors that does not have the car to reveal a donkey. He asks if you would like to stay with your original door or switch, should you switch or does it not matter?
The 2nd is the Birthday Paradox. It states that if you have 23 people in a room, there is 50% chance that 2 will have the same birthday. At 70 people there is a 99.9% chance that 2 will have the same birthday.

Have done this one several times with large groups. Amazed at how there is always at least two people with the same birthday.Uuaww wrote: The 2nd is the Birthday Paradox. I used to understand it, and now reading it today, I don't.Weasel wrote:I remember learning about Monty's paradox in high school statistics and thinking my brain was going to explode
I found it funny that on Wiki it states that they somehow mimicked this in an experiment with pigeons, and the pigeons were able to figure out to make the switch. Pigeons are smarter than humans!!!
