I didn't get to see the play but did Craig touch 3rd?

That's a good question. I never looked at that.

It is a terrible rule.

Honestly what is middlebrooks supposed to do there? He made a play on the ball. He can't teleport out of the way. That's why it's a dumb rule. I can see if he tackled him from trying to score but he was on the ground from making a play, not trying to stop him from scoring.

His legs going up is irrelevant. They had already called it before he even did that. It was because he was in the runners way and impeding him from scoring.

Tough loss

yeah, but on the flip side, shouldn't the runner be allowed an unimpeded run at home? The rule doesn't say it has to be intentional. Are the Cards just suppose to chalk it up bad luck and have a guy stay at third? Doesn't seem fair to the team running the bases if there was no rule.

But when both guys get tangled like that with no fault of either one how do you decide to call it on the fielder? Why not call it on the runner then for sliding into him and not being able to get the ball if we want to go that way.

It's like a receiver and corner back getting their legs tangled on a deep pass. No call.

Craig could have stayed at third if he thought he wasn't going to make it.

It's just slanted all the way to the runner and that's why the rule is terrible. They don't take the fieldrr being a fielder into consideration.

Again, what did they expect him to do in that play? Not go for the ball?

By rule, it's actually not interference if he's in theqact of fielding.

But in this instance, it was what happened after the act of fielding transpired.

If you watch the replay, which I'm sure you have, the umpire doesn't call it till he saw the runner stumbling, which was after he tripped over Middlebrooks. Sure his legs going up was irrelevant because he was going to stumble over him regardless, but it didn't help Middlebrooks case at all. Maybe Middlebrooks was actually lifting his legs up to clear the base path thinking that's where the runner was going to be to try and avoid the interference.

The rule may be dumb to some, but it's always been there and they implied it correctly. Sucks for the Sox to lose like that after Pedroia made a great play to save the initial run from scoring.

I just watched the replay a few times, and to be 100% fair, this is not the case at all.

He actually made the call well after, when Craig hit the ground.

exactly. This guy is off the hook now. After he just skipped a throw to second on the stolen base too. I didn't see Game 2, but read he made a bad play in that game as well.

Made the right call but you could still argue that Craig went out of the baseline (its fingertip to fingertip when he is on the bag) and they could have said Craig caused the contacted.

I read up last night but can't find it now lol.

Do you have a link to the rule that states fingertip to fingertip?

I believe the runner creates his own baseline, which would make sense in cases of runners taking wide turns where they're clearly a few feet away from the imaginary straight-line between the bases but that is still considered his running Lane.

Couldn't find link but you are right that the runner creates his own line but Craig's line would have been the baseline since he stopped on the bag.

Pretty good summation here.

I know we're just debating the fine, fine details here. But I think because Craig got up and started running before making contact with middlebrooks(obviously it was for a very short period of time), that straight line became his baseline that he created.

At any rate, crazy way to end a game.

Red Sox could have argued that Craig initiated the contact and the runner would have been out at home.

And the last statement of "Craig still would have scored easily" is debateable. Especially given he has a strained foot and Bogaerts was backing up the play and threw a strike to home. Terrible way to lose a game but oh well.

Goes without saying but a must win tonight and now Victorino is out. :x

Bucholz is throwing puss.

Injured pitchers, obstruction calls, just falling apart here after a great playoff run.
