It is amazing that SF went 1-13 on third down for the game, and that "1" was the last play of regulation when the Giants were just preventing any score and gave up the 30 yard pass.

The Giants ran 90 plays to San Fran's 57. Has there been a disparate play count like that in an OT game ever?

That was probably the best display of punting in a conference championship game I've ever seen (22 punts and almost every one of them was great, each guy punting in double digits and averaging over 45 yards a punt). Clutch stuff.

The Giants had more pass attempts (58) than San Fran had offensive plays (57).

San Fran completed less than 1 pass for every 2 minutes of offensive possession time (12 completions in 28+ minutes).
your team had 33 more plays and won off a fumble in OT? and you're happy? lol. That'd be a cause of concern for me imo
Why would I not be happy regardless of any of this?

I think it is great that they ran 90 plays and controlled time of possession by about 10 minutes against one of the best defenses (if not the best) in the NFL. In comparison to the divisional round where the "high octane best offense ever" Saints only ran 12 more plays and possessed the ball only 3 minutes more than San Fran.

Besides, observations are on a game by game basis. It doesn't matter how you win, just that you win and make it to the next round. The last two Giants super bowl wins were after "how did they manage to win that game" road wins in the NFC championship ('90 at San Fran in a 15-13 contest where they only scored off 5 field goals and stripped Roger Craig to get the ball back for the last one; and four years ago in Green Bay against Favre in OT).
They got the win and that is what is important. But, with those 90 plays, Eli took a lot of hits. It is probably good for him that it is the Pats that they are playing and not Baltimore.

Brees is reportedly "livid" about getting the dreaded franchise tag.

what am i missing here. its one of the few times his salary will be guaranteed. Why does everyone freak out about the franchise tag?

My only guess is that he is unhappy with playing there, must not like the management or something. I don't follow the NFL as closely as NCAA but can teams still put in "bids" on him but New Orleans has the chance to match that offer and he is forced to stay there right? So say, Miami offers him a 5 year 100mil contract NOLA can match it and he is forced to stay there or am I misunderstanding the Franchise tag rules?

he cant go anywhere with the franchise tag.

its essentially a 1 year guaranteed contract worth an average of the 5 highest paid players at that position.

so brees will get like 15 mill for one year guaranteed

15 guaranteed or 50+ with a long term deal. That's why he is pissed

Yea I'd be pissed too if that is how it works. I think he should be in the top 2 for QB's in payroll. The franchise tag really sucks if you get tagged and then have a Bo Jackson type injury that year. I'm surprised that the NFLPA doesnt fight this, at least let other teams bid and give the current team a chance to match it to force that player to stay there. Maybe give a compensation pick if the franchise player decides to leave said team at the end of the first round.

This is essentially what the non-exclusive franchise tag is. The Lions just applied it to Cliff Avril. He can negotiate with other teams, if Detroit decides not to match they get two first rounders as compensation (so very unlikely). That being said, not sure if Brees was exclusive or not

cause even when you get a 5 year 100 mil deal in football, some of it guaranteed. say 40mil or some shit (just grabbing at a number)

to get 15 mil guaranteed is wonderful, until you get hurt and your career is over and you can't earn the extra money you would have had if paid on a longer deal

if he had a regular contract and suffered a Bo type injury they'd drop him anyhow and he wouldnt get the rest of his contract.

Tom Brady got 48.5 guaranteed 2 years ago. You don't think he could get that?

Yea but some of it is guaranteed, most likely well over the top 5 average salary for his position for the 1 year contract.
