Reliever for two young starting pitchers and one more prospect. I personally am a huge fan of Velasquez so obviously happy with the deal. Plus the fact closers can be very volatile assets
Kinda kills the yanks deal for Velazquez with Andrew Miller. Damn

I'm kind of confused seeing them so apt to trade Miller... Is it just a value will never be higher kind of thing?

That's what it seems like.

He's still only 26 and the games evolving and placing more importance on defense where he is a class of his own

If they get one more starting pitcher you won't be able to make any money betting them for the world series next year.

That's starting pitcher type money is all I am saying. Seems like a lot but in this day and age of baseball finance it's probably just an average contract.

Well he reportedly passed on a 200M deal and he plays 150+ games a year versus pitching 30
But I do agree at first glance these amounts seem astronomical but like you said it's pretty reasonable (used lightly) considering the increased revenue namely massive TV deals

Heyward is now making Goldschmidt money.
2015 WAR numbers
Heyward - 1.96 defensive, 3.89 offensive, 6.54 seasonal
Goldschmidt - 0.9 defensive, 6.81 offensive, 8.79 seasonal

Thoroughly confused by your comparison. Goldschmidt signed a team friendly deal and by all accounts is playing at a level much higher than his salary will be. Only one of these players hit free agency. You compared a outfielder capable of handling all three positions to a first baseman who will only ever be that and possibly DH

And look at Andrelton Simmons offensive numbers. I'm not saying he's better than Goldschmidt or a lot of other players, I'm just saying he got exactly what was expected in the open market
And that's hitting primarily leadoff or second in the order so he could easily be a 80 RBI guy with growth in power as each spot in the lineup has different goals

He had a great 2014, pretty good 2012... but he's not even in the conversation with guys like Simmons defensively. His offensive numbers are worse than AJ Pollacks and on par with guys like Kyle Seager, Kole Calhoun and JD Martinez. This contract was more about hype/name than substance.

Not in the same conversation with "guys like" (please name the others

) Simmons huh?
Defensive metrics are, of course, imperfect, but it’s still notable that since debuting in 2010, Heywardleads all Major Leaguers, at any position, with 119 Defensive Runs Saved. He’s also the runaway leader in cumulative Ultimate Zone Rating in that time (+94.4), and his prorated UZR/150 of +18.4 trails only Juan Lagares and Andrelton Simmons among qualified fielders. Those rankings hold weight even when shortening the sample size to the past three years, as each metric agrees that Heyward is the best defensive player in the game aside from his former Atlanta teammate, Simmons.
Guys get paid based on their futures unfortunately, just look at Smardizja, and while good comps none of those players you listed were free agents at 26. Chris Davis had 7/150 in hand, I'm just not seeing why people disagree with market value here. Sure he's not quite a 23M player but look at his competition this year

he had a 6 WAR. this is a great deal. He also has 2 opt outs in it so he can get paid again at 29 or 31.

Phillies to receive former no. 1 overall pick Mark Appel instead of OF Derek Fisher to complete Ken Giles trade... Impossible not to like this from a Phillies perspective

Just an empty statement, based upon what?
He's held his own in AA an AAA so far and is what, 24 years old? Struggled with some velocity on occasion but went from being drafted 8th overall to the 1st overall pick and then did nothing to say he can't be a #2 or 3 in the majors.
We're talking about a relief pitcher here for a potential 2 (Appel), 3 (Velasquez), and 4 (Oberholtzer) starters and then one other younger pitcher

It was smart of the Astros to move Mark Appel. The scrutiny around him was only going to grow;better to turn the page and use the asset now.

Luhnow says he does not look at picking Mark Appel as a mistake. Was the right pick for the team at the time, he said.
