Well, I have to give the Browns some credit... they are going 'all-in' on the moneyball approach. They signed Paul DePodesta as "Chief Strategy Officer." For those that don't know, he was portrayed by Jonah Hill in Moneyball. He also happened to be the VP of Player Dev and Scouting for the Mets, for the last 5 years or so. It'll be interesting to see how well he can apply his ability to football. I think this reinforces my idea from yesterday, that the next Browns GM is really just going to be a glorified recruiter.

Oh yeah... and the Patriots are going to let the Browns interview Matt Patricia. He'd be my #1 on a list of "attainable" coaches.

i like the idea but analytics aren't very reliable or easy to quantify in football

the way to solve all your problems is to get a reliable QB

the Steelers would be the Browns if they didn't have Ben.

That's assuming he would want to leave the Patriots for the Browns :)

Agreed Dave, Football is just so reliant on that one position it's unreal

So would you want the Browns to sign Kaepernick or RG3? How about drafting Paxton/Goff?

The Browns offense doesn't seem like they should be that bad.

Also maybe they can figure out a way to keep Josh Gordon sober.

They can't.

They won't.

See you in 2 years when we're talking about all of this again.

Exactly. Only the Pettines of the world (shouldn't be a HC yet types) are going to want the chance.

Gase, Patricia, and the young guns so to speak that can have their pick, why would they pick Cleveland?

One of those aforementioned not ready types is interviewing with them, Sean McDermott of the Panthers... Good luck if he ends up getting the gig... he's riding Rivera, Kuechly, and Normans coat tails

I'm not sure Patricia is on that same wanted list with Gase and Jackson right now. I think he's just under that this season, but would be there in a year or 2. That's why I like the idea right now. But he's a super-smart guy and has been groomed in New England. It's definitely far-fetched to think it happens, but I'd love it.

I agree on the QB situation. But that Browns have many more problems than that. The WRs year were awful and the running game was a joke. While a QB helps those a lot, these areas still need help. Gordon coming back and keeping his head on straight will be a huge help. The defense is terrible. I hated the Kruger move from day 1. Mingo hasn't developed at all. The window to be a good defense with guys like Whitner/Dansby providing veteran leadership is likely closed. I also think there's more to the story than what is nationally out there about Joe Haden's injuries. I've read for a few months that Haden is tied up in something pretty big legally that could seriously hurt his NFL career.

The 1 thing I've told a few Browns fans today is that with the DePodesta move, I expect guys like Mack, Whitner, Kruger and maybe even Thomas to be gone with 1-2 seasons. I would expect to see a lot of young players on the field next season trying to earn spots. It's not going to be a winning year. The best we could hope for is that we get to watch an exciting style of football. That could be anything from aggressive play to offensive scheme (spread, vertical, etc.).

Dan - That's my real problem with this. I don't want to see the group blown up in 2 years. I didn't necessarily want to see Farmer/Pettine go, but I do think it was obvious that they weren't working together (or with Jimmy, whatever it may be). If Haslem is going to invest in this approach, it's going to take time. It's not going to be fun from the start.
